I use signal because it is a simple private messenger that looks to be secure. I started using it long before a lot of the drama with whatsapp. It is very friendly so getting other people to move to this isn’t too difficult. However, some people may not like the default client but there are some options. With all of these, accounts with phone numbers are still required and the service is still currently not federated so you have to use sign..

Other contact methods are listed on their eepsite. If you do not know what I2P is, read the wiki. There may be other clients but the three that matter most is I2P with java, I2P+ with java and I2PD with C++. I2P looks friendly but in practice, it mostly isn’t.

Looking back on the years of my life this morning, I was thinking it would be an interesting exercise to review my work experience from earlier in my life, before college graduation and before the true start of my professional career, and examine one thing I am grateful for from each experience. I think it is important to look back to humble beginnings and the lessons learned through hard work and sweat.

Since my time at the university, pursuing a Computer Science degree, I have always been fascinated by programming languages and the tooling around them: compilers, IDEs, package managers, etc. Eventually, that got me involved as a hobbyist in the development of the Rust compiler and rust-analyzer, but I never got the chance to work professionally on programming language tooling… until two months ago! In January, the nice folks at prefix.dev..

I recently ran into a problem that seems to be present in a wide range of WebAuthn tutorials, but I don’t know where it originated.

Some years ago I came across a blog post that described programmers as being in one of three camps. It’s a fun, short post, so I encourage you to go read that real quick, but the gist of it is that programmers generally fall into one of three categories according to what they primarily value: Applied mathematicians, who appreciate elegant solutions to problems. Program execution on von Neumann machines is incidental. These programmers....

TempleOS isn’t really your daily use operating system of today but it is a very interesting, fun, lightweight and easy to use system. This OS is said to be the prophesied third temple. It was written entirely by Terry A. Davis and it is his final gift to us. He wrote the compiler, the language it runs on (HolyC), the kernel, several games (unfun and fun), etc. Everything runs in ring 0 and there is no networking.

They didn’t know it was impossible, so they did it” – Paul Bourget If you follow certain agile methodologies to the letter – namely points estimating all the work, and only assigning a certain amount of points to each engineer in the sprint – you give your team members an ‘upper bound’ on what is […]

Zerocalcare is an Italian cartoonist whose strips, especially in the form of illustrated books, have surged to an iconic level in the last decade. His drawing is excellent, but it is with his writing that, I think, he conquered fame. His stories are fun to read and yet profound and vibrant, all at the same time. Also, he often touches on themes nobody else covers, at least not in the comics world. It was the case with Kobane Calling: Greet..

GPT-4 will be the death of everything. Enjoy what little scraps we have left. Even imageboards will be gone. This effects absolutely everything, but lets just think about how it would effect us >AI can perfectly replicate anything, even brewing soykaf (gpt-4chan for example, which is far more outdated than what we have now) >Imageboards become meaningless as humans begin to be drowned out by ai >Eventually, imageboards are just a b....

On most Linux systems, sudo is a pre-installed program. Sudo is a very large program and for what most people use it for, it doesn’t have to be so complex. It being such a large program means vulnerabilities come up more often. For a program almost all Linux systems have, its CVE reports don’t look very good. If you want to run a program as root from a normal user account, use doas.

The UK government are on the attack against E2EE again. I’m sick and tired of out of touch politicians trying to get these draconian bills passed. They don’t seem to care how much harm bills like this can cause against companies and their users. But They Aren’t Banning E2EE In some sense they are but overall no they aren’t because it’s even worse than that. They argue that they are not banning E2EE because the messages can still be E2EE fro..

Setting a simple tor service up isn’t too difficult. The tor project has their own page Tor for it and you can find many other places on the internet telling you how like this from riseup. Below is an example I have with nginx for the web server on a debian based system (apt for package manager). Text editing is done with nano in this example. Use whatever you want (vim, gedit).

If you want to hide what packages you are downloading, this is a nice way to do that. #install required packages apt update && apt-get install tor apt-transport-tor -y After installing, edit all repositories listings (/etc/apt.sources.list , /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* , etc.) adding “tor+” before “http://”. Example below. deb tor+https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main deb-src tor+https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main deb tor+https..
