Felix Geisendörfer, one of the node.js contributers has released what can only be dubbed as the ultimate guide to writing node.js applications. He's launched a site called nodeguide.com which has a beginner's guide, a guide for how to convince your boss you should be using node (kind of funny, but sadly there are people who need this) and a style guide for standardization of indentation, naming, etc which should be taken with a grain of sal..

That may seem like a bold statement. And it is. However, Apple said the same thing about the floppy in 1997 when they introduced the iMac without it, and it slowly disappeared afterwards. ZDnet said the same thing about optical media (CDs/DVDs) in 2009 when USB flash drives reached critical mass - and of course optical media is slowly disappearing as we speak (the DVD drive in my Alienware laptop died shortly after I got it, but I never cal..

I had an interesting thought about programming languages and complexity yesterday. I think of languages like Python and CoffeeScript (and even C 1 aim to be small and consistent as a language. Things like Perl and Ruby are much more complex. I have been studying both Ruby and CoffeeScript for a while (I think about a year for Ruby and maybe 6 months for CoffeeScript guessing from unreliable memory), and I feel like my JavaScript/Cof....

A couple of months ago, Facebook started rolling out it's Timeline feature. For those who don't know, it's a new form of a Facebook profile, which displays a user's profile in a very different way, based on their entire life's history. It's a very dramatic thing and is a very impressive endeavor. I signed up the very minute it was announced and have had it as my default profile, though it hasn't been viewable by anybody but me for some time..

I alluded in earlier posts of How Heroku Works that we have talented engineers. In fact I would venture to say that there is not a weak link when it comes to our engineers at Heroku. Ensuring we have talented engineers makes it easier for us to find other talented engineers and maintains a level of quality in our product. This means we must be very careful about not diluting our pool of engineering talent, which is where our hiring proces....

I would just like to preface this by saying I do not condone cheating but I thought of this as a “challenge” and not so much as “cheating”. A project I am working on required me to checkin to places on foursquare that I was not currently near (or even close to). Now the answer to this was pretty simple. Checkin through the API using the lat and long of the venue I was “supposedly” at. Boom. Worked without a flaw. Ok I will admit it I am k....

Travel opens my mind to new perspectives and allows me to recontextualize existing systems of thought. I had casually studied Roman history over the course of a few years, prior to my travels to Italy. My understanding was built upon a small collection of books and two excellent podcast series. While one can learn a great deal from books, podcasts, and other media, that knowledge is divorced from its original context—i.e. we musn’t mi....

I saw this sign outside a coffee shop. Most people would just walk by and laugh, but it got me thinking. What would 2PAC do? Seeing as 2PAC is one of my favorite artists and I was already walking with earbuds on, I started playing an oldie but goodie on my iPhone, “Changes”. Now if you have never heard of rapgenius.com before, you should definitely check it out. It has translations of basically every rap song thats popular, and the arti....

Ever since finishing Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Battlefield 3 last weekend I’ve been thinking about nonlinear vs linear games. Having played both so close to each other, the contrast between the two has been fresh in my mind. So what follows are some random brain excretions on the subject, which may or may not make any sense.

So I recently ssh'ed into a shiny new Ubuntu 11.10 server on EC2 and noticed some new things. Firstly, Ubuntu seems to have enabled the byobu terminal multiplexer configuration by default. This looks potentially handy, but just like Oh my zsh I don't feel motivated to futz with it just now. It's easy to disable byobu with just a quick byobu-disable, which will, somewhat surprisingly, fully exit your shell, log you out and close your ....

The next half year, I’m scheduled to give the talk “Experience Agile Programming” in Kiev, Gothenburg and Riga. In the presentation, I pair with a local developer and show a coding kata in Java, Ruby or CoffeeScript. After the presentation, I engage the audience in a discussion of what they saw, when they would use it, etc. I might also show a few more programming tricks if time permits and the audience requests it.

Just a quick update to let you know that wildcard searches have been updated to support prefix and postfix. Essentially this means the following searches now all work, *print *clo* clo* In addition code characters such as { } [ ] < > are now being indexed. Finally searchco.de has been on a bit of a diet and should be a lot faster to load and search.

Instead of using Scrum, maybe we should use MyScrum. It’s like Scrum, with the stuff added that you think will super charge your MyScrum. This is my MyScrum: I want to measure velocity every week I want to demostrate the product with a cadence that makes sure users show up to the demo I don’t want to have story point estimates, I want to have story point budgets I want the product owner, not the team, to own the budget/estimate (but they te..

I stayed up all night last night playing the single player campaign of Battlefield 3. I didn’t really notice how late it was until I was already more than halfway through the game, so figured I may as well keep going. Right now I’m running on a couple of hours of sleep after being awake for more than 24, so I’m still a bit spaced out and loopy. I thought I’d write down some quick notes about my thoughts on the campaign before I forget.

Hi, I’ve started playing around with some ideas and features for the next build v2.8 This time round I’m going to be using the private beta testing process on the marketplace, so if your interested in doing some testing email me the live account you have associated with your phone and put to subject to [BBC News Beta]. I’ve added a couple of people in who I already had addresses for so about 80 spaces left.
