Many years ago I bought 10 LED juggling balls from Oddballs in the UK. At the time, the special they had on was pretty good for bulk orders, but even today the balls are pretty cheap, if a bit basic (11 Pounds UK). The balls, being cheap, did not last. They have replacable batteries and … Continue reading "Upgrading cheap LED Juggling Balls" The post Upgrading cheap LED Juggling Balls appeared first on Circus Scientist .

Long day today, but managed to fix all the integration tests that had broken during the latest refactor. It‘s nice to finish the day with the latest build running smoothly. I had to re-record all the test fixtures, but that‘s been made a lot easier following recent changes I made. Previously I had to create all the test mocks by hand, which was really laborious and error prone, but now it‘s all automatic. Anyway, nice to have some progress ..

Ryan welcomes Brian O’Grady,  Head of Field Research and Solutions Architecture at Qdrant, to discuss the differences between traditional text search engines powered by Lucene and modern vector databases, when vector search’s exact-match needs work for things like logs and security analytics and when semantic search works for user-facing discovery and non-exact results, and how Qdrant is growing into video embeddings and local-agent context....

Figure 1: Plato's Cave by Jan Pietersz Saenredam; 24 hour clock licensed under CC3 from Wikimedia ; systemd logo by the systemd project licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0 My favorite metonymic technology term is "cron job": even though cron may not literally be the daemon that executes actions on a schedule, we apply the term to anything that walks like a cron and quacks like a cron. Gateway API is what Ingress should have been from day one. I don’t say that lightly. I’ve spent years wrangling Kubernetes Ingress resources, writing controller-specific annotations, and debugging routing issues that only existed because the Ingress spec was too simple for real-world traffic management. Gateway API fixes nearly every complaint I’ve ever had, and if you’re still running pure Ingress in production, it’s time to start planni..

A practical breakdown of the agentic stack — MCP, Skills, Hooks, AGENTS.md, and Context Engineering — what each one does and where to start.

We'll spend some time going through most of the options, in the end you'll have confidence to set up a system to your liking.

Elastic 9.4 makes Elastic the context and retrieval layer of choice with Agent Builder enhancements and Workflows GA while native Prometheus support and TSDB improvements make Elastic Observability the best platform for logs, metrics, and traces.

Last week, I took some time off in York, England, often described as the most haunted city in the country. I wandered through the ruins of abbeys that have stood for nearly a thousand years, walked along medieval walls, and spent an evening on a ghost tour hearing stories passed down through centuries. There’s something […]

It's not the fork that's the problem, it's the attempt to make it look official, says original Notepad++ dev Don Ho

Put a capable coding model inside a developer’s primary workspace, and the IDE stops being a place where you write code. It becomes a place where you direct an agent, watch how it reasons, manage what it pays attention to, and decide when its output is worth shipping. That was the defining theme of the […]

I was in a meeting a couple of years ago at a global life-sciences company where I spent 20 minutes explaining the limitations of FHIR. My role at the company was advising the technical architects as they put together their data flows and transformations, and incorporated FHIR into their systems. The reason I was on […]

Some SQL operators are as esoteric as they’re powerful. One of the oldest operator that you’ve likely hardly ever used in real world applications is NATURAL JOIN which is the default in relational algebra. We’ve covered a funky use-case for NATURAL JOIN earlier on this blog. The main reason why it’s not very useful is … Continue reading Why JOIN USING Can Lead to Errors in SQL →

Heavy specialized AI agents are an anti-pattern. Fewer agents with deep skill libraries beat them on every axis that matters: cognitive load, flexibility, context budget, determinism, and maintenance

Heavy specialized AI agents are an anti-pattern. Fewer agents with deep skill libraries beat them on every axis that matters: cognitive load, flexibility, context budget, determinism, and maintenance

We ran the same coding tasks with and without prebundled tooling, across multiple models and languages. Here’s what changed. Eval-driven development IDE-native search reduced latency, cost, and budget overruns. The comparison below uses paired task-level deltas. Aggregate medians and totals are shown for orientation. Budget overruns are tasks that exceeded the USD 0.50 per-task cap. […]

Every weekday morning, someone on the AI team at incident.io kicks off our spend report skill. Claude pulls a dozen BigQuery queries, computes a 7-day baseline range for the KPIs we track, hunts for anomalies (runaway processors, mis-tagged spend, onboarding spikes) and posts a structured report into our #ai-costs-pulse channel. The skill exists because AI inference costs are growing fast and don’t reduce neatly to a single graph. Spen....

Hey everyone, caught me at the right moment — This cleared up a lot of confusion for me. Keep them coming!

If you’ve been connected to the internet for a while, you’ve surely heard of AI Agent Skills. They teach your agent to do this and that. You might have even used or written a couple of them yourself. If you aren’t yet familiar with them, the idea is simple: Instead of prompting instructions for a […]

This post is part of the Game Boy series (#10). In my last post , I wrote about how retroachievements.org works, and I am currently creating achievement for the GameBoy game Turok: Battle of the Bionosaurs. When I started out, I couldn't find any maps for the game, which is a pity, because a good achievement set should cover (to some extent) all of the available content of a game, including secret areas etc. Normally, VGmaps.com ....

Each morning I look over my work calendar and make a series of verbal requests: Set a timer for 9:59 Set a timer for 10:59 Set a timer for 11:29 Set a timer for 1:29 Set a timer for 2:29 Why? I do not want to miss any meetings. I will miss occasional meetings if I'm not notified. I want to keep my phone on silent. I don't reliably notice my phone vibrating. While I do notice a smartwatch vibrating, I can't we....
