Three more of these blog stat reports, and I’ll have two year’s worth of monthly reports - the first report was on January 2018 .

My NAS sits there quietly doing it's job most of the time. However, recently I needed to troubleshoot a cron that appeared not to be running, so went looking for log entries. Turns out Debian 8's default behaviour was to send cron loglines to journald only (i.e. no passthrough to rsyslog). To make matters worse, there's no journal rotation set up by default, so the loglines go back _months_ and JournalD is hysterically bad at actually g..

Gergely Orosz has some great advice for professional networking, for people who don’t do networking well. “A surprisingly efficient networking method I found was doing cold reach-outs to more experienced software engineers, offering to buy them coffee or lunch. In exchange, I asked them to share their advice ... What I did not expect was this approach to be far more valuable than just a one-off networking session. In all cases, I had fa..

Who am I? I’m Jean-Baptiste Doyon, but everyone calls me Jb (sounds like “G-Bay” in French). Across many misinterpretations, it evolved into the online handle Jiby (my French friends make it sound like the English initialism for Great Britain ), giving the domain name of this website. While I’m natively French, originally from a town near Nice, I moved across Europe a few times for my studies before settling in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Here at Snyk we try to make the process of choosing the most secure base image smarter, smoother and most importantly, more data-driven. First, let’s start with some background about Linux distro security, since we focus on Linux-based images in this blog post.

With the recent Pocketcast PR blunder I finally decided to jump back to open source Antennapod. This has been painless especially with the introduction of the Remove silence feature, the main feature that kept me with Pocketcasts for so long. The only issue I had was a Private feed with broken cover artwork, this was frustrating but it looks to be an issue on Patreons end. Thankfully Node Red is available to rescue the situation! ....

Today I get to spend some more time on one of my favorite topics, the vehicles you use to get the gear you pack to the places you want to go . I outlined the process that led to my 4Runner in Choosing an Adventure Rig , and today I want to talk about its loadout. In the first part of this article, I will talk about the gear that stays in my vehicle full-time; in the second, I will outline a basic packing list for a typical adventure. ..

Amazingly enough, git is now 14 years old . What started out as Linus Torvald's 'three day' replacement for BitKeeper is now dominant enough in its domain that even the Windows Kernel is hosted on git. (If you really are amazed by the age of git, that last bit might be even more amazing.) In any event, I also use git and have done so for close to ten years. Along with a compiler and an editor, I'd consider it one of the three esse....

Ground ivy is this smelly (at least according to my wife), annoying, invasive yard weed that has creeping stems that sprawl over and under the lawn, crowding out the grass a lawn is supposed to have.

Welcome to my website! This blog is meant to record some of the thoughts I keep coming back to, or discussions I’ve had over and over again with different people. My rule of thumb for inclusion here is “if you’ve had to say it more than twice, it’s time to write it down”. See the About page for my background and motivations. Look forward more posts as I try to condense my thoughts in written form.

Note: This is more a stream of consciousness than a blog post. It’s not detailed and mainly for my own memory on how to set this up. Be cautious. So I’ve recently built a new home server/lab and wanted to use some of it’s power to run my daily dev stuff. I’ve been playing a bit with VSCode Remote for Containers which lets you define you dev environment as a container and commit it along with your code… it’s super nice.

5-7 minute read “Onboarding customers is taking too long!” “Our customers are feeling frustrated!” “Our sellers are missing their quotas!” “Q4, our busiest season of the year, is right around the corner, and we need a solution ASAP!” All of the above complaints were funneled into the Solutions Engineering team at NextRoll. We were not providing support that met the standards expected from our team. In turn, our sa....

Traefik 2.0 is here ! Traefik is a reverse proxy load balancer (and more), it can learn the routes to respond to by discovering them in multiple providers, Docker, Kubernetes … Traefik v1.x is very stable, v2.x is fresh new tech, with breaking changes and unfinished documentation, so test it first. From Traefik’s documentation: Providers discover the services that live on your infrastructure (their IP, health, …) Entrypoints listen for inco..

Out of all the topics I want to tackle here, I feel most excited to talk about adventuring. Although my passion for it all but died out in high school, after seven moves in as many years, it reignited in college: when I had to decide whether my profession would be the anchor that kept me stationary or the means to a nomadic lifestyle down the road, I chose the latter. This choice has informed every major decision I have made since then, and..

Stewart Brand, with a fascinating look at the results of conservation efforts amidst cries that the sky is falling: “The trends are favourable. Conservation efforts often appear in the media like a series of defeats and retreats, but as soon as you look up from the crisis-of-the-month, you realise that, in aggregate, conservation is winning. The ecologist Stuart Pimm at Duke University in North Carolina claims that conservationists have..

Shipping production software requires a lot of housekeeping; so much so that many developers mentally block out just how much time a day they spend endlessly shepherding their work through the release lifecycle. Does the pull request have merge conflicts? Are tests passing? Is the linter happy? Is some other automated check failing? Most of these failures require intervention; whether it’s a finicky spec failing in a test suite or somethi....

Intro I've been writing this post as I go, and you may still see changes if you check back from time to time. This post is for writing about things I'm figuring out, and for keeping notes on what I want to figure out next, as I get ramped up on Common Lisp. When I'm done there will hopefully be stuff here other people can use. There's a lot to love and admire about Common Lisp, but the language has some pointy bits that ....
