Earlier this week we started the process to upgrade one of our hypervisor compute clusters when we encountered a rather painful bug with HP’s Broadcom NIC chipsets. We were part way through a routine rolling pool upgrade of our hypervisor (XenServer) cluster when we observed unexpected and intermittent loss of connectivity between several VMs, then entire XenServer hosts. The problems appeared to impact hosts that hadn’t yet upgraded to..

Math fonts from six different type systems, courtesy Chalkdust I’ve always felt like constructing printed math was much more of an art form than regular typesetting. Someone typesetting mathematics is less a “typist” and more an artist attempting to render abstract data on a two-dimensional surface. Mathematical symbols are themselves a language, but they are fundamentally a visual representation of human-conceived knowledge—knowledg....

How do you design a tool that tows the line between 'exciting new ground' and 'real world practicality'? We asked a lot of those questions with the Event Gateway.

Dear Postgres, I’ve always felt an affinity for you in my 9 years of working with you. I know others have known you longer, but that doesn’t mean they love you more. Years ago when others complained about your rigidness or that you weren’t as accommodating as others I found solace in your steadfast values: Don’t lose data Adhere to standards Move forward with a balancing act between new fads of the day while still continuously improving....

1600 words, 8 minutes. You’ve suffered a breach. Your security was circumvented. Data was lost and the public, shareholders, media, and perhaps regulator must soon be informed. A chain of events has begun. What you do next will determine in large part where that chain leads. In this post I’m going to talk about a tactic I’ve seen used to successfully re-frame a bad situation and nudge the narrative in your favour.

My friend went on a multi-day hike, but as luck would have it, his tent broke after three days. This r....

Using your own product consistently — or dogfooding — is a great technique for validating your work, especially when you fit the description of the target user. But it’s just not enough to create a great product. To do that, you need to talk to users and truly understand their needs, goals, and pains. That being said, it’s often easy to overlook who should be included in the research process.

Michael Feathers says that legacy code is any code without tests but I’d go a step further and say that legacy code is any code that is still running even though the original developer(s) are no longer working on it. And there is certainly plenty of that in financial institutions. There are other characteristics too, such as: unreproducible production environment incomplete source control missing files ‘master’ fails to build no a..

Versioned builds are one of the more confusing features of Codename One mostly because the word “version” is so overloaded with meaning. The feature itself is remarkably simple as explained in this video tutorial. Versioned builds allow you to build against a fixed point release version of Codename One, that means that if we break something in the build servers you can still work against the last major version that we released.

Python 3 and Python 2 have various functional differences. On their own, they’re not necessarily better or worse (though arguably Python 3 should be an improvement), but any change may introduce risk. This post highlights and explains a few differences between the versions that have security implications.

Breakdowns of our favorite ServerlessConf talks, plus some high-level takeaways for the serverless community.

I did a lot of work on the developer guide PDF making it more suitable to print, as part of this work I submitted the guide to Amazon’s KDP which means you can now order a physical book of the developer guide. I reduced the page count significantly for lower cost and image size requirements. As a result the book is much smaller but contains the exact same information in a denser package.

The Second Amendment was passed fifteen years after the American Revolution, in 1791, as part of the Bill of Rights. This was just three years after the Constitution was ratified in 1788. The complete Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." James Madison originally proposed the..

In 2010, a group of designers from Columbus, Ohio set out to create a grassroots, cross-discipline, and creative conference. Since that first event, Midwest UX has been an ongoing tradition that attracts innovative ideas and provides an opportunity for regional professions to engage in discussion with other professionals. Last year, Amber Wilks and Dr. Becca Green were invited to take their talk from DevCon 2016 on the road to Midwest UX.

In early 2015, I was working at an artificial intelligence startup. My team was planning to build a web application to connect to our neural network platform. The team as a whole had experience (on the AI–side) with Python, and the web team had a lot of experience using Django. We’d implemented a hybrid-app in Cordova using Backbone.js the previous year. My task was to evaluate the state-of-the-art in the frontend development landscape. I....

This year, I’ve given a lot of thought to what has made being a developer at Thoughtworks such an important part of my career and life. Much of it’s about working with great people, who default to trust and honesty, with a common drive to make a better software industry. When it comes to our craft of building software, I recognize some fundamental software engineering values that we share — both at Thoughtworks and in the wider community of..

A few weeks back maaartinus asked on stack overflow whether we can get lombok working with Codename One. After a short back and forth it seems that this was as easy as I’d hoped and he was able to get it working without a change. Personally, I like our approach of property objects more but that’s obviously a matter of taste. Lombok works by processing the bytecode after compilation to convert annotations to terse code. E.g. this J..

One year ago I’ve started to collect temperature from my house using Acurite sensors. These sensors are not too expensive and good quality but the “base” aka the radio receiver connected to internet is costly and totally closed, it’s sending your data to the Cloud™, it’s not just Acurite, all those “IOT” devices are generally poor on the software side. Receiving radio data Most of these sensors have their protocols already reverse engineere..

PacBSD is a FreeBSD kernel/world with a PacMan Arch package manager and an optionnal OpenRC init system. In short ZFS, DTrace and the FreeBSD kernel but the simplicity of Arch for packages management but the Gentoo init. It’s experimental, uncompleted, unfinished, lacks proper documentations but it works and could be/should be the solution we are waiting for :). Here is some notes on installation (in QEMU), note that it slightly diverges fr..

Code Coverage Organizing code so my 100% tested code is kept separate from other dev's 70% tested code so at least part of my coverage report is green. Flat UI DynamoDB Tables WTF is with dynamodb not having the concept of a database. This is terrible. Now we need to configure every table name for each deployment? Terraform Drop Heads up, if you use terraform and change your dynamodb table key schema, it will drop and recreate you....
