Reinforcement learning(RL) is an effective way to program robots and intelligent agents to discover their environment and adapt to it. In RL, the agent receives rewards based on the the action they did and the state of the world and resulting outcome, and learn to understand which of their actions will result in a higher reward. Who describes the reward? The programmer. For the robot, the programmer is God almighty. The programmer is the....

I’d like to start a new weekly installment for the blog: “questions of the week”. I hope to have this as a regular Friday post to coincide with the Friday release process. The general idea of this post is to bring to your attention our answers to some stack overflow questions that might be helpful for the general community. We spend a lot of time answering stackoverflow questions and some of them are pretty elaborate, e.g “How Does..

Most of the projects I worked on in 2015 were either Facebook applications (yes, somehow those are still being made) or based on the Base Framework. I didn't…

How do you encourage customers to repeatedly choose your brand in the face of alternatives? This is the question we posed at our executive retail breakfast series in London, Manchester and Hamburg this month.

We publish our Technology Radar twice a year: it’s a snapshot of current and future technologies that we think are important and relevant across the industry. We assemble about 20 of our most senior technologists from around the world to create the Radar and it’s a great opportunity to compare trends and directions using a global view. We summarize major trends in the Radar itself, but there is enough going on that a longer article is appro..

We just published a new introduction to Codename One video, that we hope will set the bar for future videos from us (or at least set the bar for the more important videos). This initial one is focused on NetBeans but we intend to publish similar videos for IntelliJ/Eclipse shortly. You can check out this video in the How Do I section right here . for your convenience we also embedded the video below but the transcript is only wit..

Sadly, when cloning a repository from Gerrit. the Gerrit’s commit-msg hook is not populated in the local repository git hooks folder. Here’s a neat trick that I just learned that always puts that there. scp -p -P 29418

I've learned so much during my time at IBM Design! This is a little wrap up post and an announcement about my next adventure.

In our original Java 8 support announcement post we specifically mentioned the lack of streams but completely missed the fact that default/static native interfaces didn’t work. This is now fixed thanks to an alert community member who pointed that out. It seems that these features are turned off by default for retrolambda due to limitations that require a clean build to get them to work. This is no limitation for the Codename On..

I found a nasty bug today in some of my code. Let me explain. First, pop quiz: What is the value of this C++ expression: 10.0f + true ? 1.0f : 2.0f; If you answered 11.f, you're wrong. The actual answer is 1.0f. The ternary conditional operator (?:) has very low precedence (See http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/language/operator_precedence , it's right down in box 15). The plus operator has higher precedence, so the expression ....

I’ve been at Thoughtworks for 12 years. Who would have imagined? Instead of writing about my reflections from the past year, I thought I would do something different and post twelve key learnings and observations looking back over my career. I have chosen twelve, not because there are only twelve, but because it fits well with the theme of twelve years. 1. Tools don’t replace thinking

Steve committed the upcoming Windows port to our github repository it’s still work in progress so you can’t physically target it as part of the build system although we hope to move this port out relatively quickly. This should be more doable thanks to the iKVM route & the work from Fabricio both of which saved a lot of the effort in this port. You can take a look at this port if you are Windows inclined and let us know what y..

A mythical beast called JIT I have recently bumped into one of those articles which title sounds rather like “one weird trick” ad. Guiding just from it, you can imagine how small amount of information is contained there, and by actually going through that link there you will definitely make sure that it has some knowledge, but no real explanations are in place. Of course, a final explanation is indeed really simple - Function.prototype....

Hi, So I recently had to make some changes and wanted to ensure I could roll back, in the event of any issues. Azure Storage is great at replication and availability but it doesn’t offer point in time restore, should you accidentally make some changes and want to roll back. So I wrote a quick little powershell script which uses AzCopy and the Table Storage Rest API to find all the tables in an account and then pull down a JSON file of t..

Ever have a node process you expect to complete and exit just hang there? This happens when the code has active listeners or timers that could potentially queue up more work to be done. For example, an open network connection that might still receive some data or a pending setTimeout timer scheduled for the future. When everything is neat and tidy and all network connections and timers are properly canceled and closed, node sees that the ....

Welcome to this year's annual blog post! I've been signing git commits for my dotfiles repository since its inception in October of last year, so I was excited to see that GitHub recently added GPG signature verification . All you have to do is upload your public key to GitHub and you'll be verifying commits like a champ. Or so I thought…
