Nice and quick post here, mainly so I remember when I need it again, this is a quick sample which shows how to make a web call from PowerShell including a cookie. Most old methods will suggest using the WebClient object but the new (well newer than the WebClient) Invoke-WebRequest commandlet is a much nicer, in my opinion. It takes a bit of fooling around to get this up and running so wanted to share.

I did it. And by it I mean sleeping in the box truck for the first time. I still have a corporate apartment until Sunday, but I wanted to try out living in the box truck, because at least I still have the flexibility of normal human housing, and this way, I could work out any potential kinks. A Whole New World Okay, maybe that’s a little bit dramatic, once I was in there, it really just felt like being home, in my own bed. ..

After finishing yesterday’s post about generating images for user-combined substrate items I realized that I never really provided an explanation about how items work in general (or how they work for now, anyway).

Gradle is too slow, Ant is too basic. Buck is fast and super-configurable and I’d like to tell you how I use it for Android development. I own a pretty old thinkpad laptop so I don’t expect the builds to be too fast. Ant used to spend 10..40 seconds for each build on my laptop depending on how large the project is. Gradle takes about a minute in average and that’s too long for me - I just lose focus when I just sit and wait for the build re..

The Laravel 5 migration is complete and I’m back to substrate mixing and brain bug fixing! Actually, I think now that basic mixing is done I’m going to do a few weeks of just bug fixing. The substrate has no effect on snails’ attributes or behaviour yet, but it will. For now you can just mix different substrate items together into new substrate items.

Steven Lowe piece on Composition vs. Inheritance is a must read. Just to wet your appetite, let me quote the opening paragraph: In the beginning, there was no inheritance and no composition, only code. And the code was unwieldy, repetitive, blocky, unhappy, verbose, and tired. Copy and Paste were the primary mechanisms of code reuse. Procedures and functions were rare, newfangled gadgets viewed with suspicion. Calling a procedure was ..

Rust has some powerful tricks to model properties of aggregate types via unsafe traits with default and negative implementations. These features motivated by offering flexible concurrency/parallelism, and allow powerful closure-based APIs without losing any thread-safety (or memory-safety) guarantees at all. I realised that my recent post on the low-level details of closures missed an important aspect: how they interact with threading. ....

Wealth, asset and investment management firms are experiencing record results. In 2013, assets under management grew to a record $68.7 trillion, while operating margins grew 39%. Things couldn’t be brighter for the industry. But as we all know, current performance is not indicative of future results.

Nearly a quarter of American workers work from home at least once a week, and that number is expected to continue rising. But is working from home actually productive? Definitely, say many studies: it not only increases productivity, it also increases employee retention and reduces absenteeism. And with project management tools like Mingle and Trello, location is no barrier to collaborating with coworkers on group projects.

In my previous post, I argued how IT has become strategic owing to the demands of a digital business. Strategic IT cannot justify itself with IT metrics such as velocity or even with delivering to plan. It has to make a difference to business outcomes.

As the JavaScript port has matured we started adding new demos specifically for the clock demo , charts & GeoViz . You can now see all of them live on the web and also try the Android or desktop versions of these demos to get a better grasp of what Codename One can do and how far has the JavaScript build advanced since our 3.0 release. Plugin Update We wanted to release the plugin update this week but we ended up postponing ..

With the bed out of the way, I was ready to try bigger and better things. The next thing on my list was a place to hang my dress shirts and pants. In a real-world setting, this would be called a “clothes rack”. So I took another trip down to Home Depot , which is quickly becoming the most important place in my life, and I picked up some screws, a screwdriver, some clothes hangers, two mounting brackets, and a 6 foot long wooden rod. If I..

One important part of this whole process is turning the back of a truck into a livable, comfortable space. I have a number of plans and ideas on how to do that, and I’m going to chronicle my attempts at turning them into realities in this “Home Improvement” series. This one is a super basic one, but hey, baby steps. If I plan on living in this thing, I’ll need a place to sleep, naturally. So I wandered over to Craigslist, found the sketchie..

Hello fellow readers, This post is about a little adventure I had with maths. I'm currently reading a book called `clever algorithms`, I go along at my own pace doing researches on hard subjects or things I forgot from high school. Digging through the cross entropy algorithm I had to take a break and learn more about distribution. Namely, I wanted to refresh my mind about the normal/Gauss law.

From Wikipedia , skeuomorph ˈskjuːəmɔrf is a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original. Examples include pottery embellished with imitation rivets reminiscent of similar pots made of metal and a software calendar that imitates the appearance of binding on a paper desk calendar.

I've been a fan of Microsoft during my whole technical career. However I don't recommend Microsoft any longer for server workloads, and haven't for years due to the fact that the Linux ecosystem is far less expensive and has more innovative people working on it and sharing what they do openly. However, I am very impressed with the direction and leadership of Satya Nadella. This post The "New" New Microsoft first appeared on Dan Stroo..

Background We do things big in America. We love our malls, our big meals, our bigger televisions, and our huge trucks and SUVs. When you move into a new home, a trip or two to Home Depot isn’t just likely, it’s inevitable. Turns out that holds true even when your new home is a box truck. Below, I’ve detailed the unfocused and wide-ranging list of items I found myself purchasing. Graffiti Remover. I didn’t quite find the truck in the most perfect condition. One tire was gouged pretty badly and the left side had been tagged up pretty good. The tire is all fixed, a....

I have reached an interesting milestone in our functional programming language Winter - Winter now can do auto-parallelisation, auto-vectorisation, and even both at the same time :) Auto-parallelisation means that code is automatically executed in parallel in multiple threads. Auto-vectorisation means that vector (SIMD) instructions are automatically used instead of scalar instructions. This means that e.g. 4 or 8 multiplications can ....

I recently began a new position at Canonical. I joined this company in particular to give myself more opportunities for growth. Now, when I say that, people tend to assume I’m talking about a managerial track. I’m not sure why they tend to jump there, but it’s not what I’m referring to here. I’m talking about technical growth. I feel at the top of my game when I’m learning something brand new, and I needed a company that facilitated that.

Google has just announced that it is deprecating cloud storage and effectively a major part of App Engine that we are relying on. To make matters worse the window of time to its removal is quite short so we don’t have enough time to rewrite and adapt all the various API’s and tools that rely on this API. We have already started the process of migrating off App Engine completely both due to rising costs and Google’s horrible service/..
