Recalling our series on Conway’s Game of Life, here is an implementation of Life within Life. Unfortunately, it does not “prove” what I hoped it might, so unless a reader has a suggestion on what this demonstration proves, it doesn’t belong in the proof gallery. But it sure is impressive.

Heroku is a largely agile company, we work in primarily small teams that talk via api and data contracts. Its also a company comprised primarily of engineers, even product managers often write code. Heroku as a platform drives many of the features not from top down, but from bottom up based on engineers desires or skunkworks projects. There’s many valuable insights into how Heroku runs efficiently for engineering. I’ll be diving into many....

T minus four days and I’m getting ready for yet another trip to the Pole — this one is number ten. I guess I’m not sure what I’m going to write about on this trip, yet, but I will be posting updates as time allows. Just spent a few hours getting the blog software up to speed (there are lots of improvements I want to make if I have time). It’s interesting coming back to a project after nearly a year and seeing what I’ve learned since then. ..

Now that you have you system and project environment all setup you probably want to start developing. But you likely don’t want to start writing an entire project fully from scratch, as you dive in you’ll quickly realize theres many tools helping you build projects and sites faster. For example making a request to a website there’s Requests , for handling processing images there’s Python Imaging Library , or for a full framework to help y....

It seems Godaddy has finally plugged a hole in its whois privacy system which allowed users to see the domain owner's email address domain (ie ****@kevinohashi.com) if they tried to retrieve passwords. Now it requires the user the enter that email address instead of verifying that the asterisked email address is in fact the proper domain associated with the account. I highlighted the fix in the image below. Privacy at Godaddy just got a ..

In the article I compared what I was doing with Dropbox as a potential corporate version of iCloud. It turns out there was a LOT more there than meets the eye. Dropbox may even have **become** iCloud had some things gone a bit differently. This post The Corporate iCloud, part 2 first appeared on Dan Stroot's Blog

Jubbin has been trying to find techno music that I would like. I’m picky - I don’t like female singers and I prefer kind of a specific sound. All of this Twitter YouTube linkage to music videos made me think - how do I discover new music that I like? Mostly nowadays it’s through hearing about a band through another band, or liking music in a movie and getting the score. Or, a lot of the time, clicking through related YouTube videos until I..

What annoyed me about Real Steel - and the one thing I really really liked.

I liked Real Steel overall as a feel-good movie, but was still left somewhat disappointed on my way home from the cinema. My problem, I realized, was expecting Real Steel to be a movie about robots. It is not. Real Steel is a people story centered around the relationship between a boy and his dad - the robots are really just a hazy backdrop.

Physical memory forensics has gained a lot of traction over the past five or six years. While it will never eliminate the need for disk forensics, memory analysis has proven its efficacy during incident response and more traditional forensic investigations. Previously, memory forensics, although useful, focused on a process' address space in the form of Virtual Address Descriptors (VADs) but ignored other rich sources of information. In the....

We will cover on how the DEF CON network team builds a network from scratch, in three days with very little budget. How this network evolved, what worked for us, and what didn't work over the last ten years. This network started as an idea, and after acquiring some kick butt hardware, has allowed us to support several thousand users concurrently. In addition I will cover the new WPA2 enterprise deployment, what worked, and what didn't, and ....
