While my go-to personal computer has been a Mac for a long time I’ve used Linux (mainly Ubuntu ) off and on since probably Hoary (5.04). I remember back then you could ask Canonical to send you CDs, and I’d order packs of them. There’s probably still a few around my parents’ house! Getting it to install was one of my early computer achievements, as I was only just getting into writing software back then and it was all on Windows at the tim..

This issue of the newsletter marks three years of Disappearing Moment . I realize that publishing a short, monthly newsletter isn’t a heavy lift. Or, rather, it shouldn’t be. As with most things , I’ve made it more difficult than necessary. From the beginning, I fought any artifice that would save me from being honest and vulnerable. I channeled some of my favorite writers. Steve Albini, Mandy Brown, Stacia Brown, Warren Buffett, Eve Ew....

It's been roughly 9 months since I experimented with wiring the ChatGPT API to an Emacs comint buffer in chatgpt-shell . ChatGPT's request-response nature maps fairly well to a shell's mode of interaction. In the past, I've also talked about blurring the lines between shell and editor . That is, using Emacs as your shell ( eshell being my favourite) enables compounding goodies from both shell and editor when both are used from th....

In the year 2023, AI took center stage in the media, stirring up discussions about whether it was mere hype or real progress. However, the concept of non-human intelligence isn’t a recent fascination; it has been a dream since ancient times. As we learned more about how neurons communicate through electronic pulses in our brains, it seemed plausible to simulate our “intelligence” with similar electronic circuits. The term “machine intellige..

It turns out it's really easy to add a click-to-expand element (also a dropdown or accordion element) in Markdown + HTML without any JavaScript, since it's part of the spec . This: < details > < summary > Click here to expand summary > Surprise! details > turns into this: Click here to expand Surprise! Of course you can make this fancier with CSS and whatnot. But the core action is built ..

2023 was certainly a year . Our Prime Minister got fined for not wearing a seatbelt, Paul O’Grady’s passing left millions of dog lovers and radio fans mourning, and shortly after some bloke got crowned king in a ceremony full of high-definition horse manure. The long-running series of Governmental cock-ups continued as they lost more seats and dithered from crisis to crisis, the usual. Also the F-22 got it’s first air-to-air kill against a....

No, not that Avatar. And not the other one either. This post is about avatar.png, a handful of lines of PHP that have inspired me for a long time. Around 2011 or 2012 a friend of mine, Andrew Kvalheim , blew my mind when he made his Skype profile picture display the IP address of the computer I was using. It might have looked a bit like this.

Recent press about an actual conversation with a whale was preceeded by ground-breaking work by Dr. Michelle Fournet and profiled in the fantastic documentary Fathom on AppleTV. This is a MUST WATCH if you love the ocean - or humanity!

Another year, another reflection. Theme Link to heading Ever since seeing CGP Grey’s video on yearly themes back in 2020 I’ve stuck to the practice, and it has worked pretty well as a mild forcing function. In 2022 it was ‘Health’ and this year’s it was ‘Growth & Learning’. Where possible I chose opportunities or activities that would allow for one or both. It would be impossible to list everything I’ve picked up through the various mediums..

In an era where digital dependence is commonplace, I moved towards personal tech independence in 2023. This blog post details my transition away from mainstream tech giants and towards more secure, private, and autonomous alternatives. Breaking Free from the Norm In 2023, I finally broke free from the likes of Google, Facebook, and other tech giants—a commitment I’d long made to myself but never fulfilled. Like many of you, Google and Fac....

I find a lot of cool articles around the internet, and inspired by some other weekly links collections I’ve come across recently, I thought I’d start my own little bloglet. This week You don’t need analytics on your blog : A good reminder for indie bloggers out there to remember why you’re writing — chasing higher audience numbers can be demotivating and futile if you’re writing for your own enjoyment. Emacs From Scratch, Part 1: ....

Yesterday evening, we watched The Vast of the Night , and what a pleasant surprise it was. One night, in a small New Mexico town, a girl who works at a local radio station and an older reporter boy listen to a recording of some strange noises. Through the radio and its listeners, throughout a single night, they uncover a series of sighting stories that, from clue to clue and radio testimony to radio testimony, bring them close to uncover..

I’ve been accepted into the Bristlemouth Pioneer Program . I’ve been granted a SOFAR Spotter with a Development Kit . Unfortunately it was detained in customs due to it’s high invoiced value. I required a “customs agent” to clear it - which I did not have.

I read 24 books for a total of 7070 pages in 2023. That’s seven more books than last year, which is quite an outstanding result considering the seemingly unstoppable decline in book reading I have suffered in recent years . Most have been fiction books, and that’s something new and influential with the final result, as I tend to read non-fiction more slowly. The bad news is that I did not review most of the books I read this year, and that..

Last year I wrote “Looking back at 2022” and found it valuable to reflect and celebrate a year of work, even if just as a reminder of the things that happened before going into the next. So with another year having passed, time to try again! This time for my second full year working at incident.io. To contextualise the year, some milestones ( see company post ) are: 34 to 77 employees Opened our first New York office, Stephen moving....
