This feedback has been helpful for me too; I incorporated the discussion around the Helmholtz–Kohlrausch effect into the “contrast is complex” section of my web best practices article. I think the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect also ties into my concerns regarding overstimulation, also described in the same section of that article. Over-saturation of perceptually “light” colors that also look like “warning” colors (e.g. yellow, which conta....

We did a “lollipop hike”, extending the route slightly to a total length of 8.17 miles and 1,587ft elevation gain. We began as usual by heading first to Talapus Lake, then onward to Olallie Lake, and then took the much less well-trodden connector trail from the north-east corner of Olallie Lake straight up the mountainside to the Pratt Lake Trail. At this point we encountered intermittent patches of snow on the trail, continuing for a few h..

μKanren (“micro-Kanren”) is a tiny, embeddable logic programming language. It’s easy to understand and implement in almost any language. It’s a great case study of an embedded language: unlike other common “embedded” languages like SQL or regex, which normally are represented as just plain-old strings, μKanren takes more advantage of the host language’s features. I recommend reading the original paper : it’s short, well-written, and easy....

In performance work, you will often find many distributions that are weirdly shaped: fat-tailed distributions, distributions with a hard lower bound at a non-zero number, and distributions that are just plain odd. Particularly when you look at latency distributions, it is extremely common for the 99th percentile to be a lot further from the mean than the 1st percentile. These sorts of asymmetric fat-tailed distributions come with the busi....

You've got to hustle. Have a side-gig. Do personal projects. Build a personal brand." Such tips are frequently offered, commonly aspired to, and irregularly achieved. It is not entirely poor advice - but it is unduly simplistic. The general idea is that you've got to somehow achieve concurrency - both multitask, and execute well and with focus. And, for a human, this isn’t really possible. So what is possible? First, you have ....

Dockercontainer won’t start - Getting the final child’s pid from pipe caused “EOF”

Randomly some Docker-containers on a clients Linux machine wouldn’t start - they’d fail with the error: docker: Error response from daemon: OCI runtime create failed: container_linux.go:349: starting container process caused "process_linux.go:319: getting the final child's pid from pipe caused \"EOF\"": unknown. It didn’t matter what container it was, nor where or who started it. Sometimes it happened with Gitlab- CI jobs, sometimes wi....

Getting Back into Writing Once again, I have decided I’d like to write down more of my ideas and share them with others. I had setup a blog with Hugo and Netlify about a year ago but the free domain I used had expired and was now hosting porn ads. I really liked the Hugo setup and ease of use, but I wanted to further automate it for the day to day and not require me to directly interact with a CLI or git at all, at least directly.

TLDR: Using opponent modeling we can win 2x faster than Stockfish by playing high risk, high reward moves that Stockfish will avoid.

Read On - Yes there's a reason this picture is here … A loving tribute to [Oxide and Friends](https://feeds.transistor.fm/oxide-and-friends); Here there be dark corners of podcast specific in jokes ... It is delightfully fun to actually learn something new. And it is even more fun to translate something from a different knowledge domain, say hardware , into a domain you understand, say software . I've been listening to the Oxide a....

Preface I am not a lawyer. This post is satirical commentary on: The absurdity of Microsoft and OpenAI’s legal justification for GitHub Copilot. The oversimplifications people use to argue against GitHub Copilot (I don’t like it when people agree with me for the wrong reasons). The relationship between capital and legal outcomes. How civil cases seem like sporting events where people “win” or “lose”, rather than opportunities to improve ....

Brief update on the blog: I had been running a custom fork of the Anatole theme; it diverged pretty heavily, and I found a nice way to customize the CSS. Behold! The new-and-improved blog. Some of the new extensions to Anatole include the ability to set a static page as your profile; I’ll do this and include links to lists of publications and whatnot. This should make my blog a better place for my professional/academic life. I have lo..

Everybody in IT works with data, including frontend and backend developers, analysts, QA engineers, product managers, and people in many other roles. The data used and the data processing methods vary with the role, but data itself is more often than not the key. — “It’s a very special key, meant only for The One”— […]

Recently, I was able to upgrade to an M1 Macbook Pro and I do not need to go into detail about how awesome this machine is. There are plenty of others who have already done detailed reviews. So I suggest you Google for the reviews if you still have any doubts. I was super excited to get this laptop that I kept checking out the window for UPS to deliver it. When it finally arrived, I quickly unboxed it and swapped places with my old 2018 M....

I enjoy gardening and growing my own food. The freshness of the fruit and vegetables is unbeatable. I do not have a large backyard so for the past few years, I was limited to the little raised garden bed that I created. I also used a bunch of pots for plants that would not fit in the garden bed. The way the sun rises and sets over my property meant that my garage would be in plenty of sunlight for a majority of the day. I kept thinking ....
