Over the years, Iperborea, one of my favorite Italian publishers, has been publishing an unofficial Nordic Tales series. Their renowned nordic fiction series includes one fairy tale volume per year, usually published in December, just for Christmas. The first book was Lapland Tales in 2014, and then they continued with Danish, Icelandic, Swedish, Faroe, Norwegian, Greenlandic and then Finnish in 2021. I’ve been greedily reading each one of..

Update: the estimator accuracy could be improved using a bunch of patches . The P² quantile estimator is a sequential estimator that uses $O(1)$ memory. Thus, for the given sequence of numbers, it allows estimating quantiles without storing values. I have already written a few blog posts about it: [[p2-quantile-estimator]] [[p2-quantile-estimator-rounding-issue]] I tried this estimator in various contexts, and it shows pretty decent..

2021 Year in Review - solomon.io - 4 years ago - eng
Goodbye 2021. Hello 2022. I thought this might be the year that things would start to go back to normal.

Earlier this year, and for the first time in my professional life, I experienced pain caused by repetitive stress injury (RSI). An incorrect desk setup or keyboard can have many detrimental effects on your ability to sustain long hours in front of a computer. With RSI not wanting to go

As part of the Critical Zones exhibition in ZKM Karlsruhe, Hanna Jurisch and I offered workshops to experience the Critical Zone in a more direct way. We called it “Kritische Zone riechen und sehen”, or, translated, “Seeing and smelling the Critical Zone”. The Critical Zone is all about the processes of living, about living organisms and their entanglements. The difficult thing about dealing with the Critical Zone is that our usual ment....

Let’s talk about self-publishing. Amazon Amazon dominates the self-publishig world. Amazon has a program called Kindle Direct Publishing, in which you can upload your ebooks and paperbacks for publication on the Amazon marketplace.

My favorite books out of the 54 books (~23,000 pages) that I read in 2021: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Project Hail Mary — A fun sci-fi romp much in the style of the author’s earlier work, The Martian , but nonetheless enjoyable. Fall or, Dodge in Hell — A sequel of sorts to the author’s earlier work, REAMDE , this book is a fascinating exploration of what it means to create a world, inspired at least partly by Milton’s Paradise Lost , bu....

My favorite books out of the 43 books (~17,000 pages) that I read in 2020: Sci-Fi and Fantasy The Ministry for the Future — This is a challenging, and, at times, bleak book, but ultimately an incredibly thought-provoking look at a potential future of the world as climate change continues to accelerate. One of those books that sticks with you long after you finish reading it. Fiction and Classics Wolf Hall Trilogy ( The Mirror & the ....

My favorite books out of the 70 books (~31,000 pages) that I read in 2019: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Exhalation — Another collection of wonderfully crafted sci-fi short stories from a master of the genre. Mars Trilogy ( Red Mars , Green Mars , Blue Mars ) — I remember trying to read Red Mars as a kid when I was 10 or 11 years old. Needless to say it sailed entirely over my head and abandoned it unfinished. Returning now some decades late....

Hacker News has a summary of Atomic Habits (the book ). In my case, I really enjoyed reading the entire book. I liked its narrative, mixing [actionable]{.underline} and [concrete]{.underline} advice with personal stories and experiments. After reading Atomic Habits during the first lockdown, I was excited to try out its actionables, specially tracking to keep me honest. I tried a bunch of iOS apps, but wanted no friction, no tracking....

December is the last month of the year. The month of Advent and Christmas. Of the winter solstice and snow.

I’ve always said that I’ll keep living in the truck as long as it keeps making sense in the larger context of my life. And for the past ~6 years (plus or minus a pandemic ), I think that’s been the case. I’m young, healthy, unencumbered by other humans depending on me for survival, and have had access to food, gyms, and other useful resources provided by employers. But now I’ve gone and quit my job to start my own thing , and suddenly ..

Overview The Squeezebox Keyboard is a custom-designed ergonomic computer keyboard I have been working on for nearly a year now. The primary design driving factors include: Wanting the keys really close together both within a column and across columns If there was a nice switch smaller than the Kailh chocs, I'd be interested "Home corner" concept for the home row and bottom row taking curvature to an extreme and making a straight-up co....

Dark - www.marginalia.nu - 4 years ago - eng
As is often the case these dark winter seasons, I’ve fallen into a bit of a funk. Inspiration it seems is as rare as sunlight, and sunlight is scarce indeed in the winters of the north. I do know what is missing, novelty. I’ve fallen into consuming “content”. Infinite scroll is the torture rack of the spirit. What is necessary doing new things and seeing new inspiring sights, exposing myself to new inspiring thoughts.

another year - Ok, 2021 ended. I realized I didn’t blog in November or December. Wonder what happened. I think I didn’t do very well in October on any of these goals and the last two months got busy. Anyhow, lets reflect Retrospective October Running: I don’t think I finished the running goal....

WFH Day 657 - ingo-richter.io - 4 years ago - eng
WFH Day 657 Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great party to start the new year. Let’s all hope that we stay healthy and safe given the uncertainty of the still ongoing pandemic. New year, new beginnings. Everything is possible, and I’m looking forward to some exciting times. I still have the company-provided sabbatical that I must take this year (it will expire otherwise). I’m looking forward to traveling to Yosemite in February, N..

I'm starting the new year with a new job. To paraphrase a friend, "it's just moving from one $BIGCORP to another", but it's still exciting. I worked my last gig for 5 years, so I'm nervous, but also very ready to do something new. While I'm doing one new thing I might as well do another. Taking some time off between jobs has given me enough breathing room to redo my website.

Merry Christmas! Hope you had a great Christmas Day with your loved ones and family. We spent Christmas Eve in a nice dinner with Mom, my sister at my cousins’ home, the Monteros, Graciela and Carlos, with their two daughters, Belén and Verónica. In sum, it was a great night with anecdotes and laughter… and...

I’m going to start keeping a list of random facts I learn. I’m primarily recording natural organic discoveries, e.g. from conversations with real people in real life, so most entries will have a personal story behind it, although I’m not recording those stories so it’ll be an exercise for the reader to imagine. There are actually some from before 2021 to make up for the fact that I decided to do this a little after the start of 2021.
