Vera Gheno’s “Potere alle Parole” (Power to the Words) is an essay on the importance of appropriate use of the (Italian) language, not just in written works but also and predominately in everyday life. What would we think of a person who, having a vast wardrobe of beautiful clothes, always wore the same suit out of laziness? These situations appear unlikely; yet, they are examples of the attitude that many have towards their language: t..

Update, 08 July 2021 : GitHub has confirmed that all public code that was on their servers was used to train Copilot. That means some of my code was used, though it was older versions. I suggest deleting all code off of GitHub if you can. GitHub has been on my radar before , and it wasn’t for a good reason. Well, it’s on my radar again, and it’s once again not for a good reason: Copilot .

Back in May of 2019, I signed up for Arcadia Power. I got a Google Home as a sign up bonus, but the biggest benefit to me was the ability to pay with a credit card (and get that sweet, sweet cash back).

gemini://gemini.conman.org/boston/2021/07/07.1 I felt the need to add some thoughts tangentially related to this post by Sean Conner. Why do we hold unit tests in such high regard? Enterprise software development (Agile with a TM at the end), and to an increasing degree open source software development has really accepted the Unit Test as personal lord and savior deep within their souls. If it doesn’t have coverage, it’s bad. If it has..

In this post, we will demonstrate how small misconfigurations or unwanted side-effects can create Amazon EKS security issues. Then we will look at resolving them.

Notes on using a Digital Ocean Droplet to copy Google Takeout data to Backblaze B2, for my own reference and in case they are useful to others. This uses rclone to perform the sync. Google Takeout allows exporting all your Google data, but requires a modern browser, with GUI and JS. The total data can be huge (~36GB for my last export), so downloading it to my local machine and uploading it can be slow (even on a Gigabit connection).

In machine learning and statistics, marginalization simply means summing over a set of independent variables. For example, suppose an avid tennis player kept track of the number of days he played tennis over a period of time as well as the weather on that day: weather sunny cloudy rainy totals play? yes 70 25 1 96 no 70 5 9 84 totals 140 30 10 180 ( In this table we’re keeping track of the number of days. If you want pro..

Something you probably know, but may not have thought about a lot is that the Internet is large. It is unbelievably vast beyond any human comprehension. What you think of as “The Internet” is a tiny fraction of that vast space with its billions upon billions of websites. We use various technologies, such as link aggregators and search engines to find our way and make sense of it all. Our choices in navigational aides also shapes the exper..

Today I was interviewed by Mauro Servienti on the DotNetPodcast . The theme was my experience as an open-source maintainer on both the Python and C# stacks. We also discussed the ongoing evolution of the dotNET ecosystem, touching on a few tangent topics. The recording is in Italian and is available below here. In my previous posts, I described how to calculate weighted quantiles and their confidence intervals using the Harrell-Davis quantile estimator. This powerful technique allows applying quantile exponential smoothing and dispersion exponential smoothing for time series in order to get its moving properties. When we work with weighted samples, we need a way to calculate the effective samples size . Previously, I used the sum of all..

A shiny new expLog - explog.in - 4 years ago - eng
I've reworked how expLog is generated to make it easy to publish by a Github Action, with a shell script to run emacs in batch mode to make this significantly easier. The RSS feed became a casualty of this work, but I finally got around to fixing it today, and I hope it gets picked up seamlessly for anyone who had subscribed in the past. PS. I've been publicly iterating on a series of posts on building developer tools ; I'..
