This post shows how the core trigonometric definitions, relations and addition theorems can be simply and intuitively visualized. First published: 8th Feb, 2019 Last modified: 9th May, 2020 Note that most of us learnt that the definitions of $\sec, \csc, \cot$ were $1/\cos, 1/\sin, 1/\tan$, respectively. However, from a historical and geometrical point of … Continue reading "Trigonometry in Pictures"

DevCon: A tech conference for engineering, by engineering

In 2010 a group of Cerner engineers went to their leadership with an idea: a Cerner tech conference just for the internal development community, built and run from the ground up. The idea for a conference like this had been brewing at Cerner for several years. It was seen as an opportunity to create a large scale, sharing and learning experience for associates in Cerner’s technical workforces. From the beginning, buy-in from leadership was ..

I see many threads on Reddit and blog posts about using email inside Emacs. I mean, I already have org-mode which organizing my whole digital life. But then all my work email is provided through outlook, which does not allow me to fetch email with anything other then their proprietary software. Microsoft outlooked was designed to be used by people writing marketing emails, not people talking about code. There is no way to distinguish what i..

Scanning Docker images for key binaries - going beyond package managers

We’re happy to share that we’ve just extended our Docker scans to now include scanning key binaries that were manually installed on the Docker image. Up until now, we only scanned OS packages that were installed by OS package managers such as dpkg, apk or rpm.

We had a discussion at work about “throw away” code. One of our developers was very against developing any code that would be thrown away afterwards. He referred to this as a waste. In my view sometimes the biggest gain can be in developing code that is meant to be thrown away. It can be used to try things and, more importantly, learn things that can shape the code that is kept. This article sums it up much more eloquently than I can.

Today I figured out how to get Pandoc to automatically generate MLA citations for me! I used Pandoc and the Biblatex bibliography format. What’s nice about this is that you can enter in all the information you know about the source, keep it nice and organized in a file, and then change the citation style on the fly. Imagine if you thought you had to use MLA, but then realized you needed to switch to APA citation styles. You can do that ....

Infrastructure misconfiguration is the leading cause of data breaches in the cloud, and a big reason misconfiguration happens is infrastructure configuration “drift.” While some drift events can lead to data breaches, not all of it is bad. Understanding the distinctions is important if you're responsible for cloud security and compliance.

In 2018 I set out to replace our XenSever 7.2 based virtualisation after Citrix essentially screwed over free / open source users . This project was to directly replace XenServer 7.2 with something supported and manageable for our traditional virtualisation needs. High Level Selection Considerations I evaluated a number of options, with the primary candidates below. Key criteria (at a high level) I was evaluating: Ease of moving f....

Autoscaling was a great addition to DynamoDB and it lets you forget about assigned capacity. Here’s how we implemented our own algorithm to improve on this idea. 10-15 minute read DynamoDB is a NoSQL key-value database service provided by AWS. We use it at the core of many of our systems, since the consistent read latency is awesome for realtime applications. If you are not entirely familiar with it, it might be worth refreshing the ba....

As of today, Snyk enables importing, scanning and monitoring of .NET projects directly within GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket without having to move away to Snyk.

When I tried to fix the situation, I realized how little I actually knew about the event-loop behavior and gained some realizations that at first surprised me and some fellow developers I shared this with. I believe it’s important that as many Node developers will have this knowledge too - which led me to writing this article.

In a previous blog post we detailed how we used OCaml to reproduce some classical deep-learning results that would usually be implemented in Python. Here we will do the same with some Reinforcement Learning (RL) experiments.
