When dealing with geospatial data it is sometimes useful to have a grid at hand that represents the given data. One way to create a grid like this is to use Geohashes. GeoHashes are a hierarchical spatial data structure which subdivides space into buckets of grid shape, which is one of the many applications of what is known as a Z-order curve, and generally space-filling curves. A Geohash is an encoded character string that is computed from..

At Jane Street, we often work with data that has a very low signal-to-noise ratio, but fortunately we also have a lot of data. Where practitioners in many fields might be accustomed to having tens or hundreds of thousands of correctly labeled examples, some of our problems are more like having a billion training examples whose labels have only a slight tendency to be correct. These large datasets present a number of interesting engineerin..

The last time I read for fun was in elementary school. Since college I knew I must read more, but I never forced myself to build the habit. Then three years ago I spent time around my brother and a coworker who were avid readers. This "peer pressure" helped me get started. Since I started, I've seen concrete improvements in vocabulary. I find myself using words I didn't know I knew. I question my choice of words more. And I understand cow....

Have you ever wondered what happens when you call Array.prototype.sort()? What did the creators of JavaScript use to sort items in the language? Today we’re going to answer that with our continuing series on common sorting algorithms. But first, the answers to last article’s Daily Problem.

Started seeing "backup already in use" error from my daily Time Machine backups, against my Synology. Disabling and re-enabling AFP did the job (via Synology -> Control Panel -> Files Services -> Enable AFP service).

Two months ago I hadn’t launched any solo project that got users. Until lately everything I had ever done was with someone else, usually with a compatible skillset. The problem with this approach is that if someone on the team loses interest or is busy the project dies out. As this happened a couple of times I decided to take some time and work on projects by myself. The products I launched Klipped.in ( https://klipped.in )

In the last post I talked a bit about how I might approach expressing genes in SnailLife Go, and how this worked in the PHP prototype of the simulation.

My imgur had been acting up for a while now. As we discussed in the last article, sorting is the most frequent activity a computer performs, and also happens to be the most thoroughly-studied activity by computer scientists. Over the next few articles, we’re going to explore the tried-and-true sorting algorithms have that defined the field throughout the years, introducing relevant advanced data structures along the way.

Last year we held a machine learning seminar in our London office, which was an opportunity to reproduce some classical deep learning results with a nice twist: we used OCaml as a programming language rather than Python. This allowed us to train models defined in a functional way in OCaml on a GPU using TensorFlow.

It’s been a steady month in terms of stats for this blog. While there hasn’t been much in the terms of improvement stats-wise, they have remained consistently good.

Earlier in 2016, I came up with the idea of creating a Python module which could provide functionality of profiling functions w.r.t. SQL queries and tell exactly at what lines of function, the queries were happening. I called that package Goofy and created it with the engineering of Python AST manipulation. You can read the post on it here later. It helped us profiling views serving AJAX requests but it had some limitations too. E.g. we....
