While working as a consultant I spent time with a number of large companies helping them move from a tradition boxed software model to providing SaaS applications. At trivago we have been using code reviews as a part of our process for a good while now. In the beginning they weren't used by many teams but as word of their positive impact spread, more and more teams started adopting this practice, benefiting every day from its many advantages. Like any new practice it has been a learning process from the start. In this blog post I will cover why code reviews are incredibly beneficial when done right an..

A few months ago, I took a leave of absence from Google to do a stint with the US Digital Service. A lot of people know about the US Digital Service because they helped rescue the healthcare.gov website. But you might not realize that the US Digital Service has helped veterans get their health benefits, […]

Cerner’s 7th ShipIt Day took place on December 8th and 9th. ShipIt is a 24-hour hackathon with the goal of building something awesome, usable, and value-adding within a single day. The event was hosted at our DevCenter in the Realization Campus, a large open space that hosts our DevAcademy (to learn more about our DevAcademy, check out this earlier post). We had 18 teams made up of associates from different Cerner organizations.

Over the past couple of years I have set out to create the ultimate Linux on the desktop experience for myself. Obviously everyone who runs Linux has their own opinions on things . What this post will outline is my ultimate Linux on the desktop experience. So just remember that before you get your panties in a knot on HackerNews because you live and die by Xmonad (I live and die by i3, fight me). First, you should already know that I r....

It’s 2017; my site needed to stop looking so 2013. Thank you, Andrew Three and a half years ago, my buddy who is into design, Andrew , had a pretty swanky personal website. I thought it looked nice, so with his permission, I forked it, and pretty much took out his content and added my own. At first I was proud of it, and tried to add content to it. I even wrote a post on how to change the keyboard icon which still gets most of th....

Before Trump takes office, I want to create a picture of the high-water mark, something I can point to and say “That was how it was” without the fog of time, or the distortions of propaganda and ideology. I was inspired by Sarah Kendzior: Fellow Americans, I have a favor to ask you. Today is November 18, 2016. I want you to write about who you are, what you have experienced, and what you have endured. Write down what you value; what sta....

Note: I'm currently publishing pieces from my vault. This was supposed to be published on 2017 January 13.I had an enlightening talk once with The Giving Tree1 about his plan to start a VR-focused organisation in University X-1. In X-1, you have to do a couple of things before you can start your own club:

Tech teams often cargo-cult the practices and patterns that are established earlier on by their creators. This can lead to useless boilerplate proliferating and sometimes to the creators eventually deciding that they have no choice but to disavow their earlier approaches. “Many don’t realize I wrote all that stuff when React was relatively new and people shared what they learned, not instilled ‘rules’.” — Dan Abramov, November 2016....

Kubernetes shares the pole position with Docker in the category “orchestration solutions for Raspberry Pi cluster”. However it’s setup process has been elaborate – until v1.4 with the kubeadm announcement . With that effort, Kubernetes changed this game completely and can be up and running officially within no time. I am very happy to announce that this blog post has been written in collaboration with Lucas Käldström , an independent m....

While rolling out our brand-new JavaScript framework to the trivago Hotel Search, we started the largest teaching initiative that our dev department has seen so far. 40 developers, many workshops, many screencasts, some newly discovered teaching talent, some frustration, a lot of puzzle pieces. Read how it went.
