Ok, so I have a confession: this is the first post that I’m actually typing up FromInsideTheBox . By the magic and miracles of modern technology, I’m actually able to access the internet by tethering to my cellphone. I’ve already talked about how this place is starting to feel like home, but I think calling it a dorm room, as someone said to me today, is much more appropriate. It even looks like one (see the picture above for the current s..

There's been a fair deal of hubbub in the community about version numbers, including what is and isn't Semantic Versioning , what qualifies as a breaking change and how to use version numbers. Underscore.js released a second digit "minor update" that was actually a breaking update for some people. They argue it was minor because not very many people would be affected. The community however was angry. On the opposite side of thing....

Following the example of GKH and others, I've added one more piece of software on my email setup and workflow . That piece is msmtp , a very simple and lightweight SMTP client, that integrates really well with the rest of my setup.

When developing a new Ruby on Rails project, one doesn’t always start from scratch. Often one first searches for an open-source project that will at least get one part of the way there. For example, one might want to do something as simple a create a website with a blog as well as image galleries. The first step in this journey might be to find some open-source blog software for Rails, e.

I noted that at NANOG64 this week in San Francisco, there are talks (both from Juniper) about both SPRING/Segment Routing and RSVP-TE. These are both protocols/technology approaches (since one can’t really call SR a protocol) that I’ve been involved in the evolution of over the last few years. A question that I’ve been asked more times than I’d like is why we chose to look at a new approach (SR) rather than go with a technology that exist..

Look at that stupid thing. With its silly little drawers and its wooden frame. Pfft. In reality, it’s just a simple four drawer dresser from Ikea, which I definitely needed because I’ve been living out of a suitcase my mother lent me, and I need to return it eventually. This project was my first two-day project, and in total took me about six hours to complete. Nothing went horribly wrong per se, it’s just that Ikea is Satan incarnate, ..

Note: This post was written in 2015. The writing quality is not that great and I won’t try to improve it as well. This was republished from another platform for pure historic value of being my first blog post ever. My opinions and thoughts on the topics shared in this post might have changed. My first two Home Improvement Projects weren’t exactly the highest caliber works of craftsmanship. For example, putting more than two or three articles of clothing on the clothes rack caused it to bend, shake, and warp, and the rope around the bed came undone approximately once a day. So my third Home Improvement Project was setting right what I had previously done so, so wrongly. And it’s the weekend, which means that after my workout and ..

I’ve survived my first (nearly) whole week of work. Granted, it was mostly filling out forms, hearing about benefits packages and retirement plans, and going to developer workshops to get synced up with various company policies and infrastructure. Not that it wasn’t interesting (it was), but I’m not a fan of how little I’ve gotten to contribute thus far. I understand it’ll take time to get caught up to speed, I’m certainly not unfamiliar wi..

When I was at university in the 90s, studying computer science, my final-year bachelor project was a “fractal raytracer”. My idea was to write a program which could produce pictures of those wonderful artificial worlds one saw on posters of the time, hung in every university dorm room. Raytracers render highly realistic images, and fractals produce interesting shapes to render. I set about designing the program, with all the features I ..

This is a follow on to my original post on using RX with the Band to stream sensor information. Using the RX streams and some maths to detect (roughly) when a user taps on the band. This allows you to send a notification to the band, for example, saying “I think your home, tap band to turn on your heating”. Below is the result, I can really easily “await” tap or shake events! You can grab the code here and see how it all works below..

Don’t worry, I’m not going to post about every single night I spend in the box truck, but this one was markedly different than the first, and deserves to be noted as such. When it was bed time last night, I wasn’t feeling the same type of anxiousness that pervaded the previous night. I was much more relaxed and confident. I still did my best to be quiet, but I wasn’t stopping every few seconds to make sure that nobody was watching. The over..

Learn how we introduced webpack to build our JavaScript assets. One of the main challenges was to run both Assetic and webpack in parallel for some time, in order to run tests and to make sure nothing was broken. This was achieved without any code or configuration duplication by developing a custom webpack loader.

Hello fellow readers, The last two months I've been extremely interested in evolutionary programming and group dynamics. In this post I'll try to gather some important factors I've noticed repeating themselves across the multiple opinions and examples, and the ones that just seemed noticeably important.

Nice and quick post here, mainly so I remember when I need it again, this is a quick sample which shows how to make a web call from PowerShell including a cookie. Most old methods will suggest using the WebClient object but the new (well newer than the WebClient) Invoke-WebRequest commandlet is a much nicer, in my opinion. It takes a bit of fooling around to get this up and running so wanted to share.

I did it. And by it I mean sleeping in the box truck for the first time. I still have a corporate apartment until Sunday, but I wanted to try out living in the box truck, because at least I still have the flexibility of normal human housing, and this way, I could work out any potential kinks. A Whole New World Okay, maybe that’s a little bit dramatic, once I was in there, it really just felt like being home, in my own bed. ..

After finishing yesterday’s post about generating images for user-combined substrate items I realized that I never really provided an explanation about how items work in general (or how they work for now, anyway).

Gradle is too slow, Ant is too basic. Buck is fast and super-configurable and I’d like to tell you how I use it for Android development. I own a pretty old thinkpad laptop so I don’t expect the builds to be too fast. Ant used to spend 10..40 seconds for each build on my laptop depending on how large the project is. Gradle takes about a minute in average and that’s too long for me - I just lose focus when I just sit and wait for the build re..

The Laravel 5 migration is complete and I’m back to substrate mixing and brain bug fixing! Actually, I think now that basic mixing is done I’m going to do a few weeks of just bug fixing. The substrate has no effect on snails’ attributes or behaviour yet, but it will. For now you can just mix different substrate items together into new substrate items.
