I know this sounds extremely lame, but on Wednesday August 3rd, I threw my back out playing Angry Birds. And each time I’ve told people that, they’ve either burst out laughing, gave me the quizzical look (as if I’m joking), or simply state something along the lines of “if it were to happen, it would have happened to you.” I definitely plan on telling people that I threw my back out playing Angry Birds at future events (it is a great ice ..

I’m getting worried about Google. Long one of the champions of the open web alongside Mozilla, the rise of social networking silos and the app economy seem to have scared them. And like any scared organism, they lash out. Many of their plans to make web competitive against native development environments are good, there is indeed much to improve in the stack. But what I’m uneasy with is the unilateral way they go about it, preferrin....

Well, what was left of my post-Ukrainian childhood, anyway… Website contests Does anyone else remember those website competitions, where you had groups of sites joining teams (usually fantasy-themed) and compete amongst themselves to get the most votes, and then the finalists of those teams would go up against finalists of the other teams until there was one winner left and they got an animated GIF award to put on their page?

This is awesome for all Vimsters out there. A guy named Michael Pohoreski seems to have had a similar problem to almost every other vim user/beginner out there. He couldn't find a good vim cheat sheet, so he made the mother of all cheat sheets. It's damn ugly, but pretty good:

A while back I applied to Microsoft’s MACH Scheme (graduate scheme) and was lucky enough to get offered a place. Only started on Monday but I’m already loving it. If you’re a student considering applying for graduate jobs I would strongly recommend it . P.s. As I’ve started work and don’t working internet connection at home (yet) I just wanted to quickly apologise for not getting back to people as quickly as I normally would. I will st..

Pre-warning: this is going to be a long post and might be all over the place. It’s a collection of personal thoughts and considerations about cryonics and mind transfer.

Well it seems searchco.de has been very slow to respond over the last few days. Turns out I had some rogue processes running for another domain chunews.com which were eating a lot of the CPU. I just killed them and switched off the processes for maybe good as that website really needs an overhaul anyway.

I saw this post on Hacker News today and thought it might be interesting to the TextMate users out there. It's written by this person, Jack Kinsella and he goes very much in-depth into how to convert yourself from being a TextMates to a vim user. An [equilateral triangle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equilateral_triangle), in case you've forgotten, is a triangle composed of lines that are all of the same length. For some reason I started thinking about those kinds of triangles the other day and wanted to create one, for use in a pattern or something. I am not an FPS player. That is, I wasn’t until I read the game plotline for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I’ve been excited about FPS storylines before, namely Mass Effect. However when I actually tried playing Mass Effect I didn’t really get drawn in. I mean, I did…but a particular gameplay element that annoyed the heck out of me pulled me out of the story and put me into frustrated-and-just-want-to-go-away-now mode.

It’s modern practice in web applications to augment text fields with suggestions while one types. There are plenty of Javascript libraries out there to do that, and plenty of integrations with the Java web framework  Wicket  out there as well, but somehow none quite did exactly what I wanted, so I’ve rolled my own Wicket code (based on JQuery). What I wanted, but what other Wicket / Javascript libraries did not do, were:
