In reply to Ed Hurst. Hi Ed! Indeed that is the reality. Back to square one I guess. Nice to see you here again!

Today I figured out how to get Pandoc to automatically generate MLA citations for me! I used Pandoc and the Biblatex bibliography format. What’s nice about this is that you can enter in all the information you know about the source, keep it nice and organized in a file, and then change the citation style on the fly. Imagine if you thought you had to use MLA, but then realized you needed to switch to APA citation styles. You can do that ....

The WhatsApp clone app is finally up in the online course . With that finally out of the way we can turn our attention to Codename One 6.0 which is due dangerously soon. We might even slightly postpone the release so we can finish crucial RFE’s/issues. Getting the WhatsApp clone out has been an ordeal, not so much because of complexity (the app is much simpler than Uber or Facebook)… It was due to the amount of concurrent things I had..

In 2018 I set out to replace our XenSever 7.2 based virtualisation after Citrix essentially screwed over free / open source users . This project was to directly replace XenServer 7.2 with something supported and manageable for our traditional virtualisation needs. High Level Selection Considerations I evaluated a number of options, with the primary candidates below. Key criteria (at a high level) I was evaluating: Ease of moving f....

Autoscaling was a great addition to DynamoDB and it lets you forget about assigned capacity. Here’s how we implemented our own algorithm to improve on this idea. 10-15 minute read DynamoDB is a NoSQL key-value database service provided by AWS. We use it at the core of many of our systems, since the consistent read latency is awesome for realtime applications. If you are not entirely familiar with it, it might be worth refreshing the ba....

January brings in a brand new year, which means I’ll be reading brand new books… Or maybe I’ll be reading old books. In either case, they’ll be new to me.

As of today, Snyk enables importing, scanning and monitoring of .NET projects directly within GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket without having to move away to Snyk.

When I tried to fix the situation, I realized how little I actually knew about the event-loop behavior and gained some realizations that at first surprised me and some fellow developers I shared this with. I believe it’s important that as many Node developers will have this knowledge too - which led me to writing this article.

Electricity was possibly humanity’s greatest invention to date and changed life as we knew it. Fast forward to 125 years in the present and, we find ourselves at the cusp of another similar technological singularity, courtesy of Artificial Intelligence (AI). While the concept of AI has been around at least since the 1950s, there are a number of reasons to believe that AI’s time to shine is now.

I’ve noticed that as tools get better, I actually need less of them. For example I no longer use Resharper as Visual Studio is enough or I no longer need WinMerge as Visual Studio Code can do same.

Last week Steve committed the final piece of the rich push notification support RFE . This commit introduces support for replies in push messages. This came too late for the whatsapp clone but if you want to build an app of this type you would need this feature. The app main class should implement PushActionProvider. This defines a method that returns a set of categories. E.g. public PushActionCategory[] getPushActionCategories() { re..

I was contacted for this, as a result of research I'd previously conducted into the feasibility of delivering high resolution video via encrypted overlay networks (in this case, Tor). The customer was a small group of people who had an idea, but weren't sure on how best to implement it - the idea being a privacy sensitive service delivering legal adult content, in effect a PornHub without all the tracking and profiling that MindGeek doe..

mgmt @ FOSDEM : Later today I’m giving four talks about mgmt at FOSDEM . I’m also giving two more on the following day. (One is a 5 min lightning talk.) I don’t know how I got accepted for so many talks, I just replied to the CFP for every room where I thought I had something interesting to share, and well, here we are! I got rejected for the main track again, but I guess it’s up to me to make my work more generally appealing firs..

In a previous blog post we detailed how we used OCaml to reproduce some classical deep-learning results that would usually be implemented in Python. Here we will do the same with some Reinforcement Learning (RL) experiments.

TL;DR < You can find the source code here . I used the Wii Nunchuk controller to prototype one handed controller for creating computer graphics. I used the Blue Pill board which carries a STM32F1 microcontroller with a built-in USB peripheral . That allowed me to implement it as a true USB HID (Human Interface Device) for the Windows OS . The results were disappointing. My USB HID implementation was poor. I have fixed sev..

The Knapsack problem is one I’ve encountered a handful of times, both in my studies (courses, homework, whatever…), and in real life. Unfortunately, the times I encountered it in a real situation I never had to actually fully solve it – it was more along the lines of, “hey, this is just like the Knapsack … Continue reading "0/1 Knapsack Discrete Optimization w/ Dynamic Programming"
