This is a story nightmare about the messy state of Microsoft’s DirectX shader compiler, and trying to wrangle it into a nicer experience for game developers. In some respects, we now build the DXC compiler better than how Microsoft does. Setting the stage For Mach engine we’ve been building an experimental graphics API called sysgpu using Zig, aiming to be a successor and descendant of WebGPU for native graphics. It will support....

We’ve had some fun with growing a bit of food in our small yards. Oranges, lemons, and pineapples have come through nicely, and we planted a mango tree a few months back but it will take a year or years to start producing. We also planted tomatoes from seeds I got at the library–on the … Continue reading Terrible humans: Tomato edition

Ethan Mollick, one of my few LLM/AI sources , just dropped his first impressions on Gemini Advanced, released today, but which he’s been testing for a month in early access. Let me start with the headline: Gemini Advanced is clearly a GPT-4 class model. The statistics show this, but so does a month of our informal testing. And this is a big deal because OpenAI’s GPT-4 (the paid version of ChatGPT/Microsoft Copilot) has been the dominan..

After yesterday ’s, another article on the modern era of blogging surfaced on my RSS feed. In A Golden Era of Blogging , Jim Nielsen boldly proposes that we live in, you guessed it, a new golden era of blogging. He argues that the advent of the ads market tainted the original blogging scene in the mid-2000s, and something similar is now happening in the YouTube scene. Today’s independent blogger is not in it for the money (there’s none ..

I am frequently annoyed at the things that I can’t remember. And when I’m trying to remember the details of something, I often turn to my text messages—thanks to big improvements recently, it is now quite fast to search my whole iMessage history on my phone, provided that I can remember some verbatim part of the message I’m looking for. And often, once I’m in the past, I want to look around: text messages from ages ago provide surprisingly ....

Distributed consensus in transactional databases (e.g. etcd or Cockroach) is a big deal these days. Most often under the hood are variations of log-based Paxos-like algorithms such as MultiPaxos, Viewstamped Replication, or Raft. While there are new variations that come out each year, optimizing for various workloads, these algorithms are fairly standard and well-understood. In fact they are used in so many places, Kubernetes for example,....

I live by Alfred as a launcher and all around insta-utility thing. I also live by whatever terminal I am currently using. Switching from Terminal.app to iTerm.app was easy enough in Alfred, just need to hit the down arrow after trying to launch it 2-3 times and it picks up that ⌘-spc t e r means iTerm.app not Terminal.app and we're off to the races. This works as iTerm nicely has t e r in it, so Alfred picks it up as I type t e r. Ghost....

Vision Pro is not capable of delivering the level of low-strain fidelity needed to work long hours on anything related editing text. I think it is fair to say a 4k display or near equivalent is the minimum generally needed for this now, particularly for programming. Here’s a concept which I think is implicitly used by a lot of teams but (to my knowledge) isn’t named and doesn’t really get talked about: conditional commitments. These are commitments you make to prospective customers, but you don’t execute on unless the customer signs. You are taking the bet that if the customer signs, […]

The History of the Web has an interesting take on the resurgence of blogging and the indie web that seems to be occurring these days. With roots in the world of fashion, there exists a cyclical principle suggesting that every two decades, previously popular trends “every 20 years or so the trends that were once popular will begin to be on the forefront again.” What’s old is new again. However, these recurring trends aren’t just rip-offs..

One of the great joys of working on a search engine is that you get to reverse engineer SEO spam, and overall study how it evolves over time. I’ve been noticing the search engine spam strategy of adding ‘reddit’ to page titles for a few years now, but it feels like it’s been growing a lot recently. I don’t think it’s actually working , but it’s so cute that they are trying.

To be sincere, I have a strong preference for written content. There is something with audio and video (podcasts and streams) that doesn’t fit very well with me or how I consume content when I’m at the computer. Nevertheless, there is a lot a great content that is only available through podcasts. So sometimes I […]
