Problem: Compute 16% of 25 in your head. Solution: 16% of 25 is equivalent to 25% of 16, which is clearly 4. This is true for all numbers: $x\%$ of $y$ is always equal to $y\%$ of $x$. The first one is $\frac{x}{100} y$ and the second is $\frac{y}{100}x$, and because multiplication is commutative and associative, both are equal to $(x \cdot y) / 100$. You can pick the version that is easiest.

I initially bought a 32x32 RGB LED matrix in 2018. Back then the idea was to fit it onto a bag, as some kind of wearable device, for 35C3. But it never really worked out. So in preparation for CCCamp23 I noticed the LED panel again and decided to order some more of them. These are the 32x32 4mm pitch RGB LED Matrix Panels from Pimoroni , with either the Interstate 75 W or the Adafruit RGB Matrix Bonnet to run them with a RP2....

I’m a US Citizen Now 🇩🇪 + 🇺🇸 TL;DR On July 31, 2023, I received my US Citizenship certificate during the Oath Ceremony at the USCIS Field Office in San Francisco. The whole process from filing BBG to certificate took ~22 Months. There was a delay in the biometrics appointment since I was in Germany for a more extended period. I now have German and US Citizenship and can freely roam between countries.

It’s been a busy summer, and the large shortfall in donations last month has been demoralizing, so we’re taking a week off to rest and recuperate. The curated links section will be (mostly) silent, and behind the scenes we’ll be taking a brief break from our usual researching, writing, editing, illustrating, narrating, sound designing, coding, et cetera. We plan to return to normalcy on the 11th of September. (The word “normalcy” was not co....

In the old times of applied statistics existence, all statistical experiments used to be performed by hand. In manual investigations, an investigator is responsible not only for interpreting the research results but also for the applicability validation of the used statistical approaches. Nowadays, more and more data processing is performed automatically on enormously huge data sets. Due to the extraordinary number of data samples, it is of....

Artur Malabarba's Debugging Elisp Part 1: Earn your independence is nearly a decade old, yet it rings just as true today. Learning to Edebug really "is the right decision for anyone who doesn't know how to Edebug." Why, you may ask? He best puts it as "running into errors is not only a consequence of tinkering with your editor, it is the only road to graduating in Emacs." For me personally, it earned me that independence to bend....

This is a collection of random personal experiences. So if you don't want to read everything, feel free to skip to the end for takeaways. I write because I'd like to see more high-quality meetups. And maybe my little bit of experience will help someone out. 2015: Philadelphia I first tried to organize a meetup in Philly in 2015. I was contracting at the time and I figured a meetup might be a good way to source contracts or just meet inte....

Hi, Change tut weh.

If you don’t know what a Framework laptop is, go read someone else’s review first. This ain’t the best introduction, but it will be helpful if you are nitpicky, migrating from a Thinkpad, and/or running Linux. (I also posted this on the Framework Discourse .) I am (approximately) a software and cloud infrastructure engineer. For about 8 years I’ve used Linux on Thinkpads, mostly Debian with the default GNOME desktop environ..

There is a service called “IST Skola” which our daycare is using. It’s an app for taking attendence, delivery and pickups and it is possible for the staff to share images and text from the preceeding days / weeks. A couple of years ago they used another service called Truegroups. With that service it was possible to download the images and reports. We also got emailed copies of the images and reports. When they changed to IST, it was ..

How many roads must a programmer walk down before you call them a contractor? It’s been about three years since I went down this (bumpy) path, and I finally have the feeling that my contracting business is “bootstrapped”1. Here’s an account of my journey so far, hoping you find it inspiring! 0. Contents Articles about contracting and freelancing usually take the form of abstract advice: how to find clients, how much you should charge, etc.
