Motivation River is a Python library for online machine learning. One of the main features of River is its support for data streams, which are continuous streams of data that are produced and consumed in real-time. This makes it well-suited for handling large volumes of data, as well as for handling data that is generated continuously. I started contributing to the project in February 2019, mainly in the stats and time_series modules.

What Is Synthetic Data? Synthetic data is machine-generated data based on real-world data. It requires building a machine learning (ML) model to capture the patterns in the original, real data before generating new synthetic data based on these patterns. The generated data accurately represents the original data’s statistical distributions, patterns, and properties.  Synthetic data is useful for applications facing privacy concerns – it is ....

Whether you think about them all the time or never at all – mountain bike brakes are what keep you alive on those gnarly descents. And while the whole braking system matters, I’m not going to talk about rotor sizes, 2-piston vs. 4-piston, or lever angle; I’m talking about the humble brake pad. I had long considered brake pad choice a foregone decision – resin (organic) pads are king and metal pads (sintered) are for Huffy! But t....

A few weeks ago, I added an "open with" command to dwim-shell-commands.el . It's pretty handy for opening files using an external app (ie. not Emacs) other than the default macOS one. dwim-shell-commands-macos-open-with and dwim-shell-commands-open-externally are typically enough for me to handle opening files outside of Emacs. But every now and then I'd like to change the default macOS app associated with specific file types. Now this....

WebAssembly defines a portable binary-code format for executable programs. It can be used to run languages that support WebAssembly in the browser. Thus, you are no longer restricted to only use JavaScript in the browser. In this article I want to show you which programming languages currently support WebAssembly.

Think of this type of NFT as a magic item from your Dungeon Master. You can put as many magic potions in your inventory as you want, but unless they were issued by the DM, they are worthless in your game. There’s no need to distribute your inventory list to every DM in every game […]

I have lots of laptops and one desktop. While jumping around the country, it’s annoying to have to setup a dev environment on every machine. There are solutions out there like docker, github codespaces, or renting a VM from one of the dozens of cloud providers. But I already have a great desktop with everything I want already setup. I work on tons of different projects (most don’t see enough work to warrant a writeup) and it’s annoying to h..

The Accessible Platform Architectures (APA) working group hopes to designate adapt- as a reserved prefix in HTML 5. You can read the draft proposal on the public-adapt mailing list . The “Adapt” family of specifications will allow pages to expose generic meanings behind elements, and allow users to “switch” these to versions they understand. A sarcastic sentence could have a literal alternative; words can be swapped with symbols. Like RD....

Photo by Dollar Gill on Unsplash Introduction As the Scala 3 - book points out, Scala has a rich set of collection classes. As well as List, of course, it also has a solid implementation of LazyList. If you're not sure what that is, or what is used for, read on and find out, plus even better I will walk through a full implementation of LazyList that can do some magical things. Scala List can represent collections of zero o....

Expanding the ~vern wiki and a call for contributions ~xmoo Fri, 04 Nov 2022 Hello! I figure it’s probably about time to announce that ~vern has a wiki! Our wiki is focused on info pages and tutorials so people can get all the help they need. The ~vern wiki isn’t new by any means, it is actually a couple of months old. (It was first created on August 16th I believe) The ~vern wiki is decent but it does not explain a lot and lots o....

Office Hours have been discontinued due to lack of interest. Stay tuned for more information, coming soon, about a new project I’m working on. The below information is left for historical purposes. Working remotely on open source can make it difficult to connect with people, to get those impromptu mentoring or pair programming sessions that can happen in passing. This is one thing I’ve personally missed about working in an office on a l..

Python 3.11 is here! Our regular guests, Geir Arne Hjelle and Christopher Trudeau, return to talk about the new version. Geir Arne wrote a series of preview tutorials earlier this year, and his annual piece, titled "Python 3.11: Cool New Features for You to Try," was published on October 24. Christopher's video course came out the next day, covering the topics from the tutorial with visual examples of Python 3.11 in action.

The standard SQL WITH clause has been tremendously helpful in structuring SQL queries. Instead of nesting everything in unreadable derived tables like this: People have started moving the logic up front, just like in any other programming language, where we declare things first, lexically, then use them: Both queries will produce the 5 actors with … Continue reading LATERAL is Your Friend to Create Local Column Variables in SQL →
