Yes, and..." is a concept from improv comedy that means to affirm and build on what others do. Beyond improv, it has been popularized as a pragmatic approach to positivity - say "yes" to validate and encourage others to engage, and say "and" to be sure to engage yourself. But what about "yes people" who blindly endorse poor decisions ? And what about the need to say no to manage your time ? To handle these cases, "yes, and..." could....

A living document where I will be putting information about search index implementations as I learn about them. So there are a few talked about ways to search across content or build an index that I am aware of. Lets discuss each in term with its advantages and disadvantages Brute Force Brute Force, note that this isn’t an index strategy per say, but worth discussing anyway. Assuming you can get the entire corpus you are search into RAM..

This is an intro book to the Great Books of the Western World series. Authors do a great job of convincing you to invest your life in pursuing this series, that they refer to as Liberal Education.

Preface Threat modelling provides important context to security and privacy advice. Measures necessary to protect against an advanced threat are different from those effective against unsophisticated threats. Moreover, threats don’t always fall along a simple one-dimensional axis from “simple” to “advanced”. I appreciate seeing communities acknowledge this complexity. When qualifying privacy recommendations with context, I think we shoul....

Arrived shortly after midday on a hot Saturday with clear skies. Unsurprisingly the parking lot was pretty much full. The short road that leads up to the parking lot is gravel, and has quite a lot of pot holes, but nothing insurmountable. I’ve visited Gold Creek Pond numerous times in winter, when it is beneath a blanket of snow, but never before in summer. It is still just as scenic as always, and well worth the visit.

We arrived about 9am on a Saturday. At first the parking lot looked full, but it’s quite long, and turned out there were actually still a lot of spaces. The start of the trail can be hard to spot from a distance. If in doubt, keep walking towards the end of the parking lot with the restroom, and you’ll soon see the trailhead on your left. There is only a short climb up to the old railway line, after which the rest of the hike is unsurpris..

What is swag? Simply put, swag is any branded freebie that you get from a vendor, and it’s been used for marketing at tech industry events and showcases since the 1970s. Some common types of swag include stickers, mugs, water bottles, pins, luggage tags, plushies, squishies, t-shirts, socks, hats, tote bags, throw blankets, lanyards, sunglasses, lip balm, custom Lego sets, branded card/board games, journals/notebooks, sticky notes, phone..

Following the recent SCOTUS ruling, many have been trying to publish resources to help people find reproductive healthcare. They often wish to do this anonymously, to avoid doxxing. There’s no shortage of guides on how to stay anonymous online. I recommend using the Tor Browser in a disposable Whonix VM. The Whonix Wiki has a good guide to anonymous publishing. Few guides cover stylometric fingerprinting. Stylometric fingerprinting ....

I wasn’t planning on going to any sled shows this year, but got invited to the RAP Ferreira show last night by a friend, and I’m very glad I went! What an excellent show. If anyone is in Winnipeg tomorrow (25th), I’d definetly take the time to go see him perform at the Good Will Social Club.

Using visual cryptography I wanted to created two simple metal keyrings that when overlaid displayed some text. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_cryptography and the original paper https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/BFb0053419 by Naor and Shamir for more information. They make use of 6 ‘shares’ (6, 2×2 patterns), currently I’m only making use of the two diagonal shares. To do this I made […]

I’m thinking about coining a term to reflect a non-toxic alternative to “search engine optimization” (SEO). Working name: “agent optimization”. MDN has SEO guidelines because people often find MDN articles through general-purpose search engines. I noticed that a subset of their advice is directly beneficial to readers. For example: imagine two pages have almost the same content (e.g. pages on the width and height CSS properties). Near....

For application security, the shift left strategy is something that every enterprise is embracing today, which essentially means putting the security controls in earlier stages of development. While most tools can only solve some of the problems, Snyk does it all — making it my preferred tool for shifting left.

I've been reading High Tech case studies now since the 80s – just after I entered the business. Bryan Cantrill from Oxide Computer's podcast inspired me to get all my books out and order them on a rough historical basis. I thought listing them here might be interesting to someone. All of these I've read and there are a ton of lessons for entrepreneurs here. I put rough notes next to some of them in bold after the author name in qu....

Yesterday I deployed a new thing via HatchBox and I was using the very, very latest – Rails 7.0.3. My deploy was textbook perfect and then I viewed it in Chrome and got that awful, awful message: Web application could not be started Insert loud cursing here I know the drill – it is a lower level error than HatchBox can handle (although I can think of at least a few ways HatchBox could handle it) – so do the dance: SSH into the ....

HatchBox continues to be my favorite tool for Rails deployment hands down. And this includes Dockarno – my own Bash based Docker deployment tool. When something you pay for replaces something you wrote yourself, that's a sign of its very, very strong goodness. I just used HatchBox to support SSL wildcard deployment for something I'm building and the process was a tad bit tricky so I thought I'd write it up. HatchBox has excellent buil....

Introduction In the latest release Apple has made some big steps forward with the integration of Apple Keychain and macOS/iOS: “ iOS 15 Includes Built-In Password Authenticator With Autofill, Replacing Google Authenticator and Authy ”. Now the passwords are well managed, quite well integrated in the system, and most important: you can also add the 2FA without use third-party apps. And i think this feature is very useful, at the moment I en..

Anchor texts are a very useful source of keywords for a search engine, and in an older version of the search engine, it used the text of such hyperlinks as a supplemental source for keywords, but due to a few redesigns, this feature has fallen off. Last few days has been spent working on trying to re-implement it in a new and more powerful fashion. This has largely been enabled by a crawler re-design from a few months ago, which offers th..
