From 1997 to 2010 I believed it was only a matter of time before Linux on the desktop became a reality. I gave up in 2010 and went to OSX. But we may finally be close! Here’s my notes on installing Linux Ubuntu 18.04 on a Dell Inspiron 15 7000. It’s the easiest and happiest linux ever for me.

My blog post about ssh is still the most frequently read content on my blog four years later. I've collected enough shell tricks that it's about time for one of these type of posts about my favorite software tool of all time: the shell. My experience is mostly limited to zsh, so while the examples here will be zsh-based, I think other shells like fish and xonsh are great as well. Upgrade Your Shell Bash is fine, but at a certa....

Life is messy. We devote a lot of time and effort into managing that chaos. I thought of a little “theory”, if you will, that helps me. The Home Theory # Everything needs a home. The class of things that need homes is broad. It includes: School assignments Legal documents Pictures Recipes Ideas Projects Books Charging cables Tools etc. The home needs to suit the thing that goes there. I have found that getting this right is real....

The 35th Chaos Communication Congress is now over, and it is time to write about how we built the software side of the c-base assembly there. c-base at 35C3 The Chaos Communication Congress is a major fixture of the European security and free software scene, with thousands of attendees. As always, the “ mother of all hackerspaces ” had a big presence there, with a custom booth that we spend nearly two weeks constructing. This yea....

With one of my many honeypots actived around the world wide web, I discovered an interesting script written with the famous Perl programming language. This Perl script is a malware used to remotely control a machine, opening what is technically called backdoor. If this malicious program runs on multiple machines, there is a possibility that the attacker may have created a botnet. -Continue to read the article on SerHack.me

Starting from January 2019, Snyk’s vulnerability database will no longer be integrated into the Xray platform. Snyk vulnerabilities observed through scans done prior to January 2019 or databases not updated since then will remain visible in Xray dashboard. New scans following January 2019 will not include any Snyk vulnerabilities.

This is an old post (March 2009) that someone retweeted but still holds true on how to work out if an expert is really an expert. It also is a guide how not to fall into common traps that so-called experts fall into.

If you have ever worked with ARM Cortex M processors you’ve probably used GDB + OpenOCD combo for debugging. If you didn’t: OpenOCD connects to the processor via a STLink programmer and opens a socket to which GDB can connect. It will push data necessary for debugging (and understandable for GDB ) through this socket. That means that if you connect GDB to this socket (so called remote debugging) you can debug processor’s soft..

Should always strive to deliver – even if less than anticipated than delaying to try to over deliver. IE : you deliver more often – not just more quality – and more often is a more sure way to reach more quality than delaying delivery

This is a pretty amazing demonstration of animating an aspect of a 2d photo. This even includes pulling out bodies and animating them moving away from their original scene.

This is a meandering discussion about empathy's role in public policy debates and popular culture's role in affecting empathy. So can popular culture help to nurture or destroy empathy in politics? I try to set up a framework for exploring this, but raise more questions than I answer.

Two men start running at each other with loaded pistols, ready to shoot! It’s a foggy morning for a duel. Newton and Leibniz have decided this macabre contest is the only way to settle their dispute over who invented Calculus. Each pistol is fitted with a silencer and has a single bullet. Neither can tell when the other has attempted a shot, unless, of course, they are hit. Newton and Leibniz both know that the closer they get to their targ..
