Blog rollback - danielpecos.com - 14 years ago - spa
A couple of months ago I took the decision to reset my blog and start it again from the beginning, creating a more professional computer technology oriented content. I wrote some technical articles and I feel really proud of them, but there was something left, some place where I could write about my thoughts or anything I would think it would deserve it. Some days ago I make a quick revision of a backed up previous blog where I found some....

My last two posts focused on general game development topics, but no longer. It's the end of the year, time to look back and review before looking forward to the new year! Digital Art First off, some fun diversions. In my pursuit of an art minor at Ohio State, I took a digital art class autumn quarter. The instructor let me use software I was already familiar with, so I didn't learn much. But the class gave me the motivation to plonck my ..

I've been hooked on Node.js for the last 2-3 months. I've been doing some small projects for fun in Express, and at first I used the SASS complier that ships with Express by default. That framework is pretty limited and TJ Holowaychuk pointed me towards Stylus, a much better sass complier for Node.js. I tweeted something about Stylus a couple of days ago which resulted in a fellow countryman, named Jokull Solberg (www.solberg.is), showing m..

Personal/Work-Related Events: I started my new job of Dean of Technology in January. Basically twice the work but the same money. Most of the time it’s a thankless job (because you have to deal with complaints and bitching from everyone), but there is the odd job perk such as flex time and attending social events and conferences. I think the best part is that my official job description has a section that requires that I possess Stron..

I read a great quote in I’m feeling lucky . It described a note sent from one Google employee to another as he handed over a piece of software. Here’s what I’ve done. Here’s how it’s running. Here are some things to look at. Here’s what’s going to go wrong if it goes wrong. Here are the steps to turn it off. These five points would be invaluable documentation to any new code or functionality. Imagine how much time could be saved if you..

I’ve been playing SWTOR. Not nonstop (hey, this isn’t Guild Wars 2 we’re talking about), but regularly. This isn’t a review. I’m not far enough along for that. This is just a very quick post expressing my appreciation for the RP elements of the game.

It's common practice to start writing a bunch of nested functions in JavaScript. This tutorial describes a way to keep your code clean while doing so.

I wanted to share a quick and easy method for testing Rails migrations when using the MongoDB database. The flexibility of mongo and ruby makes this pretty straightforward. In this example, we'll be renaming a field in our example "books" collection from "isbn" to "book_number". This is a pretty common type of migration and once you get the hang of this simple case, more complex migrations follow the same pattern. First, lets generate our ....

I came upon this blog post by Seth Hoenig titled "Open letter to sites with annoying interfaces" yesterday. In the article he talkes about how some web sites and/or apps hide user interface actions until a later state. The post is a little bit funny and there might be a little bit of truth to it, but mostly it's inaccurate. The examples he covers are gmail's edit-contact page and the button used to edit a project's description on github. I'..

This quick tutorial shows a fairly complex Xpath selector and breaks down each segment. For those who work with CSS this will be easier to understand.

We use git as our versioning tool at work and I've gradually been learning a few tricks on how to speed up my development time and time spent managing my repo. When jumping between branches, continuing your work from where you stopped last time, etc., you very often open the same files as you were editing in a previous commit. This may not be a problem if you use something like Command-T for vim or rely on the file browsing in TextMate, but..

Take a moment to count the number of unique scrollbar widget types there are in Adobe Photoshop. You may be surprised. ”You can measure software maturity by the number of UI toolkits it implements.” I’ve counted four in Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Many people today who claim to be and likely are sincere followers of Jesus Christ aren’t properly educated in the discipline of biblical exegesis and interpretation. Of course not everyone can or wants to go to seminary to study this topic. We can’t fault people to be ignorant about rather complex matters. However, an introduction to the art of interpretation wouldn’t hurt anyone. My reasoning behind this assertion is that the lack of ba....

In case you didn’t know, Jonathan Lewis’es new  Oracle Core: Essential Internals for DBAs and Developers book is out (for a few weeks already). I was the technical reviewer for that book and I can say it’s awesome! It will likely be the best Oracle internals book out there for the coming 10 years, just like Steve Adams’es Oracle Internal Services book was in the last decade :)  Jonathan does a very good job explaining complex things ..

UPDATE: please see my new article on Managing Per-project Interpreters and the PATH for a new and improved take on this topic. So npm has this "-g" switch to install "global" packages that bundle command line executable scripts. I've been on a strict project isolation kick lately after dealing with rbenv in the ruby world, and I just don't see any need for npm -g. I want each project to have its own version of node, coffeescript, ....

Do you know how to apply coding practices the technology stack that you use on a daily basis? Do you know how the technology stack works? For many programmers, it’s easy enough to use test-driven development with a trivial example, but it can be very hard to know how to apply it to the problems you face every day in your job. Java web+database applications are usually filled to the brim with technologies.

I’ve always considered myself someone who has a super-natural ability to put things in perspective and explain them to others. After all, I’ve taught adults for 13 years, and EVERYTHING must be put into perspective when you teach adults ;-) However, it is difficult to put a large situation in perspective when you are too close to the action (for lack of a better phrase). And I’ve been close to RIM for many years both physically (I live ..

Working on Clojure Koans while riding on a C-17, bound for Antarctica Today I am inspired to ponder many languages at once and review which ones I use regularly, which ones I’m curious about, which ones I avoid, and what I’d like to use, if it were to exist. Programming Languages I Use Regularly Python By far the language I use most for work. I like it for its clean philosophy, its expressiveness, its “batteries included” ....

We are about to begin a series where we analyze large corpora of English words. In particular, we will use a probabilistic analysis of Google’s ngrams to solve various tasks such as spelling correction, word segmentation, on-line typing prediction, and decoding substitution ciphers. This will hopefully take us on a wonderful journey through elementary probability, dynamic programming algorithms, and optimization. As usual, the code implemen..

Hi, Right so this beta has one purpose. SPEEEEEEED. From my testing I’ve been able to, in most situations, half the loading time of the application. Took a lot of work in the back ground to get this all working so let me know if you spot anything that I’ve broken in the process. Also I lied, I also tweaked the process I use to get pictures. So hopefully it will be picking a better picture to accompany each item.

If you find it difficult to concentrate: you might think it is difficult to finish projects or learn new things. This requires protracted effort, not something you are able or willing to give. Maybe you’ll give up: why bother forcing yourself to continue when you have no natural inclinations. But don’t. Don’t try to push harder when you start to lose concentration. Do what you are most comfortable with: change direction and keep your en....

I recently attended the XP Days Ukraine conference in a rainy, but beautiful and Christmas-decorated Kiev. I conducted a coding dojo and gave a talk where I demonstrated pair programming live together with Dima Mindra. After the talk, I got a few questions about how to run a Coding Dojo. This article is meant as a guide to anyone wanting to start up a Coding Dojo, whether it’s in Kiev (Mikail/Aleksey), in Odessa (I’m looking at you, Dima!
