I previously published “ A revisionist history of configuration management ”. I meant for that to be the intro to this article, but it ended up being long enough that it deserved a separate post. I will explain Send/Recv in this article, but first a few clarifications to the aforementioned article. Clarifications I mentioned that my “revisionist history” was inaccurate, but I failed to mention that it was also not exhaustive! Many t..

Building and operating services distributed across a network is hard. Failures are inevitable. The way forward is having resiliency as a key part of design decisions. This post talks about two key aspects of resiliency when doing RPC at scale - the circuit breaker pattern, and its power combined with client-side load balancing.

I sometimes wonder if a robot could do my job. I’m a designer, and my role is to create digital products that humans want to use. Could a machine learn, faster than me, what humans want? Could it design better things than I could, in less time, with less cost and prettier to boot? I don’t think it’s too far-fetched, given that we’re living in the petabyte age and Big Data is automating many of the utilities in our lives. The potential of ma..

We had support for bouncy castle encryption for quite a while but it is not as intuitive as we’d like it to be. This makes securing/encrypting your app painful and so we procrastinate and eventually skip that “feature” altogether. Frankly, I hate working on encryption it’s painful… That’s why we procrastinated on this feature until today! We now support full encryption of the Storage (notice the distinction, Storage is not FileSystem..

This is a talk that I gave at the Vancouver Meetup on November 29th, 2016. The talk covers topics around developing your own design philosophy with a focus on decoupling from change. These are things I cover extensively in the Ultimate Go Classes . Here is the material that is covered in the talk. Review the Grouping and Decoupling topics.

The validation framework makes it easy to verify input quickly and effectively. Up until now you had to define an emblem in order to create an error icon and if you didn’t you had to define an “Invalid” UIID for every entry. This exists by default for text fields and other types but is still a big hassle just to check that we have a valid email… The main reason for this is that when we introduced the validation framework we hadn’t ..

In the first betas of Codename One we had a lot of bugs related to 2D arrays due to XMLVM. We no longer use XMLVM but the recommendation to avoid 2D arrays remains. We still use them in some occasions e.g. in the creation of a DefaultTableModel but the implementation discards them in favor of an ArrayList internally. __ | To be fair, a 2D array will be faster than an ArrayList so in this case we discarded them due to their lack of

While I find these posts useful I think it’s time to re-think this post which is overly mechanical and only post interesting news from the week rather than “everything”. So this week we’ll try something new, I’ll discuss the news in general and the questions/answers I find valuable only. I’ll ignore the other questions and this should make the post more “digestible”. peopletookallthegoodnames asked about Storage to FileSystemSto..

I’ve got a brand new core feature in mgmt called send/recv which I plan to show you shortly, but first I’d like to start with some background. It’s likely inaccurate and slightly revisionist, but it should be correct enough to tell the design story that I want to share. Sometime after people started to realize th..

I recently (finally!) finished the Advent of Code challenges using Haskell. I'm still a Haskell wannabe, but the suite of problems provided an interesting backdrop for a number of Haskell concepts that I wanted to share. The long-form retrospective is here; if you want to see a condensed collection of a few Haskell toolchain by-products, check out my shorter summary under GitHub pages . Disclaimer: I am not a Haskell expert (or ....

It is an original piece from Bre Pettis and Kio Stark – under Creative Common. For me it is a reminder that done is better than perfect, and no matter how creative you want to be there is a point where actual delivery matter more than potential awesomeness . Here it is:

This past September I took vacation time and paid out of pocket to drive to Orlando and attend ElixirConf with a few other programmers from Greenville who did the same thing. We weren't the only ones. Here is a belated recap from our combined notes and experiences.

While most of my posts are pictures (funny pictures, persona pictures, memes, etc.), I’ve also got lots of funny text posts. I got a chuckle out of reading them again, so I thought I’d share them here for others to enjoy! Here they are, sorted from newest to oldest: If you want to rapidly get through a crowded area, just carry a clipboard and try to make eye contact with people. People will give you space….fast ;-)

Subclassing isn’t bad but it becomes tedious especially if it’s just there to implement something trivial. One of the pain points we had with the ConnectionRequest API’s is the submission body wasn’t as convenient as it should be. E.g. if my web service accepts JSON in the post argument I have to write something like this: ConnectionRequest r = new ConnectionRequest(myURL, true) { protected void buildRequestBody(OutputStream os) thro..

I have a love-hate relationship with the terrain from Minecraft. One the one hand, it's the terrain that makes every world kind of memorable in it's own way. It comes at cost though; the process of generating terrain can cripple a server. That's where Chunky comes in. Chunky lets you pregenerate a world so that our blocky wanderers don't cause the server logs to fill with “CAN'T KEEP UP!” Okay. Why?

tl;dr AdRoll’s real-time bidding system produces tens of billions events daily. We store these events in TrailDBs , a fast embedded database that we recently open-sourced . By leveraging a cool new feature in the Linux kernel , you can now query TrailDBs directly in Amazon S3 without having to store the database locally, like here: Tens of Trillions of Events in Amazon S3 We have been very happy with our data processing pipeline ,....

So you want to grow your network and are prepared to travel for it – or the other way around – you are travelling to a remote place and you see this as an opportunity to network and grow your base. You will be town for a day or two, maybe a week maximum, and you want to see how to find the right people and the right event to get on your agenda and make the best out of your trip.
