Continuing with the recent posts on metrics and marketing. I want to give a quick primer on attribution. To any marketing or analytics people out there, simply skip this it would aim to be a primer recap at best for you. The very general meaning behind attribution is to give credit. When it comes to web products this can be giving credit for lots of things: Its really wonderful when there’s a direct mapping in correlation. Take for exa..

It continues to amaze me how much people devote themselves to Apple products. Every time the fruit company releases a new product, people line in front of the store for days in hopes of being one of the first blessed people who get to touch the shiny new toy. The Oatmeal has an awesome comic about this. Being all crazy and sleeping on the sidewalk aside, let’s look at more of a down-to-earth example. Being a geek and all, I get asked ra....

I love physical books, but last week I buckled. I bought an Amazon Kindle 3. I, Liza, the proponent of turning actual pages and browsing actual physical bookstores, who has two bookshelves in the main room of the house (one for fiction, one for non-fiction), have purchased an ebook reader.

Something I tend to need from time to time is some generated lorem ipsum text as a placeholder. I would normally search for lorem ipsum, click through to lipsum.com click paragraph etc… I thought this was too much work, so I quickly added a lipsum generator. To use it just type the following, lorem:100 Where you can replace 100 with any number of words up to 1000. Works for the following search texts as well,

So the iiNet TopGeek journey is over for me. I think I did well, if I do say so myself. I made it from over 200 entrants to the top 20, then top 15, then top 10 and think that I didn’t completely suck at the games challenge, taking into account that all I play is PC games (specifically MMORPGs). Congratulations to the top five (especially Jess, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the WA games challenge and who definitely deserved to go ..

So the Hacker News Guidelines tell me when submitting something I should write a blog post about it and link to that. OK, here it is. I'd like to get feedback from the HN community about my simple but effective bookmarking web application: Linkzie . I built it mostly during nights/weekends while holding down a day job doing enterprise software. I know there are a lot of apps out there for this problem, especially in the recent months fol....

I agree with everything about this: The shift from procedural to OO brings with it a shift from thinking about problems and solutions to thinking about architecture. Thats easy to see just by comparing a procedural Python program with an object-oriented one. The latter is almost always longer, full of extra interface and indentation and annotations. The temptation is to start moving trivial bits of code into classes and adding all these lit..

Recruiting is difficult. Most of the top talent already have jobs and are rarely in the job market. As a recruiter (or a headhunter, or a talent scout) these are precisely the people that you should be trying to attract. There are a few simple guidelines that might help you generate genuine interest in the role you’re trying to fill. Try to build relationships with candidates, not just a contact database. I need to know that you are som....

Note that the live event is over by now, but you can see the recording from Enkitec.tv On Tuesday 22nd March I’ll hold two (yes two) Secret Oracle Hacking Sessions – about ORA-04031: unable to allocate x bytes of shared memory errors, cursor management issues and other shared pool related problems (like fragmentation). This event is free for all! You’ll just need to be fast enough to register, both events have 100 attendee limit (due ..

Technically Spring Break actually starts next week, but I’m pretty much done with school. I only had two exams - one was on Monday, the other was a take-home I did over the weekend. All I have left is to finish a paper for my Women’s Studies class. That’s the last gen-ed class I have to take.

One of the things about ranking in Search is that you need to consider all sorts of methods of working out what is relevent. Google broke new ground (although the idea had already existed) with its PageRank algorithm which supplied better search results then all the other search engines. For what I am doing however I need to consider what programmers are looking for. One thing that I considered some time ago was working out which are the mo..

As I’m finishing up a performance chapter for the Exadata book (a lot of work!), I thought to take a quick break and write a blog entry. This is not really worth putting into my Oracle Exadata Performance series (which so far has only 1 article in it anyway) .. so this is a little stand-alone article … Everybody knows that the Exadata smart scan can be used when scanning tables (and table partitions). You should also know that smart..

Today I can announce a small but possibly useful feature which is the addition of lists. They are here as way of making it easier to find what you are looking for if the main search lets you down and you want to try a browser inline search. They can also be useful if you just want to scroll through everything in a particular subject. I have the following lists already created,

Those who follow me on Twitter probably noticed the slew of Rift tweets over the past few days - mostly achievement tweets that are sent automatically from the game when I do something awesome. This is a long-overdue post about RIFT - a new MMO by Trion Worlds.

There was a question in LinkedIn forum about whether Linux Hugepages should be used in Oracle Exadata Database layer, as they aren’t enabled by default during ACS install. I’m putting my answer into this blog entry – apparently LinkedIn forums have a limit of 4000 characters per reply… (interestingly familiar number, by the way…:) So, I thought that it’s time to start writing my Oracle Exadata Performance series articles what I’ve plann..

I've been doing some Wordpress development for the last year or so. A few client projects, some personal etc. A common chore that I find myself doing is developing the sites on one server and then moving them to the next. Very often I'll be developing on a virtual machine instance on my local machine and then placing the files online later. Just copying the files and exporting and importing the database will not do, so there are a few extra..

I finished reading World War Z. As a foreword - This review is being written a bit late. I tend to forget details about a book soon after I finish reading and I have already started reading The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, so don’t kill me if I’m missing anything important or if this post seems a little scattered.

On the MySQL performance blog there was a great article posted two days ago on how to debug long-running transactions in MySQL. Long-running transactions are transactions that are left open and not committing or reverting. Maybe because of a failed/halting application or just an application that is taking long to process.
