A Codename One community member Antonio Mannucci offered to release a gaming API that he created a while back. It took him some time but he finally delivered on his promise by releasing a cn1lib for simple 2D games in Codename One and a demo game to go with it. The project is still pretty rough in the sense that there is no real documentation or getting started guide. However, there isn’t much that needs saying… Ju..

There’s the great FreeNAS jail phpVirtualBox . It lets you run headless VirtualBox-machines on your FreeNAS server, in case you need a different operating system than FreeBSD. I’m using it to run Icinga and Musicbrainz . There’s only one problem: After a server reboot (yes, that happens) the VMs do not automatically start again. Luckily there’s a method to to achieve that. First you’ll have to connect to your FreeNAS (and the Virtu....

It feels only appropriate to write something today. Today is the first work day I haven't had a place to go work from in about four years. I joined Affinity Lab at the beginning of 2011. It was the only game in town back then. There was a waiting list and I had to apply for membership. The prospect of working from home was terrifying. I had tried it before and the result was being incredibly unproductive and depressed. Working from home w....

People keep telling me that they want to validate class and instance attributes (object properties) with Cerberus . While it certainly wasn’t conceived with that goal in mind, it is actually very possible to leverage both the Python data model and Cerberus extensibility to achieve object validation. Do you ever miss a command line to a web application? If you’re lucky, you may use a REST API with appropriate tools for the same job. This Christmas, I bought a Sonos system for our family. It’s a wireless speaker system that uses music streaming services. It supports both Spotify and Deezer, but works better with Deezer and it came with a one year free subscription, so Deezer it is.

Rust is a systems programming language that comes with an awesome package manager Cargo , which hooks into the crates.io registry as one of its possible sources of packages. The packages can have dependency relationships between each other, making the database into a natural directed graph. Rust as we have it today is still relatively new, Cargo is even newer, and crates.io is newer still, so the package ecosystem is small : at the t....

Chen spent some time working on some Toolbar effects such as the rich title areas made popular by social network apps such as G+ & Twitter. The new Flickr demo in SVN now shows a really cool ability to fold the title bar as we scroll down and expand it when we scroll up. It also shows an image based title area that can fade out of view during scrolling. Check out the video below to get a taste of the possibilities.

Today I’m releasing Gozim a side project written in Go. It’s a set of tools to serve ZIM files, (compressed copy of Wiki articles), use it to run your full copy of Wikipedia off the grid. It runs great on a small computer as the Raspberry Pi or your own laptop. It could be a solution to give access to knowledge in countries without stable internet connections.

For the first time in the history of Lemma, I'm actually keeping up with my self-assigned pace of one new level per week. These past two weeks I made two more frost levels. The plan calls for one more frost level, then it's on to the other two biomes. Both of these levels have interesting quirks and unique features. They're probably too tough right now, but I'm scheduling plenty of time to playtest and sand down the sharp edges..

This winter vacation, I had a bunch of spare time at home with my parents. It turns out that my parents call to Romania a lot – especially during the holiday season. Since Romania is far away from here in Canada, if they were to use the local phone provider, Bell, they’d be destroyed with long distance charges (c’mon guys, it’s 2015!). Usually you’d go out and get calling cards, etc, but in the past, when i was still living with them, what ....

A little while ago I wrote about deploying Gastropoda to an Amazon Web Services EC2 instance via Elastic Beanstalk. Since that day I have been running into multiple EB problems. I’m sure that if I took the time to learn I would figure out why these things were happening and how to fix them. Some problems included:

I want to be cremated I know how boring funerals can be I want people to gather meet new people have a laugh, a dance, meet a loved one. I want people to have free drink all night. I want people to patch together, half truths. I want people to contradict each other I want them to say “I didn’t know him but cheers” I want my parents there, adding more pain to their life. I want the Guardian to mis-sprint three lines abo..

Multiplication in C++ is left to right associative - e.g. y = a * b * c means y = (a * b) * c Note that although the mathematical operation of multiplication is associative, e.g. (a * b) * c = a * (b * c), the same is not true for floating point multiplication, due to intermediate rounding error. Therefore in default circumstances, the compiler may not optimise y = a * b * c to y = a * (b * c) as it may give dif....

I think it’s always a good idea each year to reflect on the events that happened during the year - it’s a great way to remember some of the great things that have happened, as well as put some of the not-so-great things that have happened in perspective. We are closing 2014 which has been a pretty eventful year for us where we finally solidified Codename One, looking into 2015 we have a lot of great plans ahead! The new year seems like a great time to discuss some of our short/long term plans for Codename One as we move forward and our general thoughts. But first I’d like to open with the things we did badly in 2014 and that we should probably improve in 2015:

Every morning I wake up to my cat Rigel wanting to play. He jumps around the bed and brings in his favorite toy ferret, purring and stepping on us until we either get up or put him outside. Then I get up and go to get a plastic bag from the kitchen before I do anything else. I go to Rigel’s jumbo sized litter box, followed by the cat who sits next to me and watches as I clean it. As soon as I’m done he steps inside and does his business. Me..
