It was just a few years ago that I read numerous articles predicting the inevitable death of retail stores. This doom and gloom scenario played out across most of the trade publications leaving retailers scratching their heads in wonderment and worried that if they didn't do something (they didn't know what) they would be overtaken by their cooler, lower cost, on-line cousins.

Speaking of app redesigns , Nevan Mrgan tweeted a screenshot of an app he was in the process of redesigning for iOS 7. Unlike Instacast 4’s mockups, this one looks like it will fit right in. Permalink.

We started moving the usages of Vector and Hashtable to use Map/Collection/HashMap & ArrayList. This follows our release of the full source code for our modified version of retroweaver and the Java packages that go with it. Recap: we had to change retroweaver which was designed to allow Java 5 code to run on Java 2 in order to get it to work with CLDC which is missing MANY features.

Two days ago Betaworks — creator of the popular iOS game Dots, the company behind Digg’s rise back to fame, and proud owner of Instapaper — opened Digg Reader to the public after greatly accelerating its development following the announcement of Google Reader’s impending demise. Especially for a product upon which work was not schedule to begin until the end of this year, Digg Reader is a very impressive entrant into the RSS reader market. ..

A few days ago Instacast’s created tweeted some mockups of the app’s next iteration . As a diehard Instacast fan, I was very excited to get a sneak peek at the next version of the popular podcasting app. Permalink.

Yup - I woke up Saturday to find the message above when I visited my website. I’ve used Primus (Planet Domain) for the past 8 years as a hosting provider, and I’ve never had any issues whatsoever - including reaching my bandwidth cap. For starters, I was a little concerned, so I logged into my cpanel and checked out the AWSTATS first: Holy crap! Did I just get too much traffic this month? I have been doing a lot of linking to my si..

My June One Game a Month project is called Interdiction . It’s a two player board game based on Tic-Tac-Toe, but with a twist. The goal of the game is to get a higher score than your opponent. Placing five of your tiles in a row grants you ten bonus points and usually, but not always, results in a win. However, it’s technically possible for a player to get enough points to win the match even if they aren’t the ones to finish the game with ..

We’ve been so busy this past month that we just forgot mentioning many of the features that went into Codename One in June and there are MANY small features that just didn’t get a blog post or even a mention! We just open sourced a major piece of our backend code, the changes to retroweaver and library code that allow us to compile Java SE 5 code to J2ME/RIM. With this change in place we will start using Java 5 features throughout the c..

These are called Custom Actions and are easy to create… here’s how to do it. Click the Edit menu, then click ‘ Configure custom actions… ‘. This will take you to the Custom Actions Manager, where you can create, edit or delete your custom actions. Yo....

The following two viewpoints are not consistent: “Come and work at our company. We are looking for someone with lots of experience. The more experience you have the more you’ll get paid!” “You made a mistake. You’re fired!” You can pick up knowledge at university and through reading books. But companies still want experience in addition to knowledge. For me, experience is very much having seen what works, and what doesn’t work, by havin..

Earlier today on an internal Heroku group alias there was a dataclip shared. The dataclip listed off some data grouped by a category, there was a reply a few minutes later with a modification to the query that used the crosstab function to pivot directly in SQL. There were immediately several reactions on the list that went something like this: While a mostly simple function in Postgres (there are a few rough edges), it really is all....

UPDATE : Google no longer supports spdy. Instead it focuses on http/2. This blog-post is no longer up-to-date. Today I tested nginx with Google’s spdy implementation.I already tested pagespeed separatly in a different post that showed the speed-boost gained from it. Now to add the security for you users. Screw you, NSA ! Installation Spdy is not built into nginx by default, so you have to download it separatly and build nginx wit....

People arguably spend as much time analyzing test failures as they do writing tests. This necessitates good functional test reports. A good functional test should not merely report where your test failed. It should give you all the information necessary to be able to make your analysis.

The claim that celebrities die in threes is usually dismissed as the result of the human propensity to see patterns where there are none. But celebrities don’t die at regularly spaced intervals either. It would be very weird if a celebrity predictably died on the 14th of every month. And once you deviate from a regularly spaced pattern, some amount of clustering is inevitable. Can we make this more precise? Rather than trying to define ex....

We’ve had a long standing annoyance with Codename One’s RTL (Right To Left languages, e.g. Arabic/Hebrew etc.) where the back button was still pointing in the wrong direction on iOS. This was REALLY annoying to such a great extent that up until recently we recommended that people don’t use RTL on iOS devices. Well we finally fixed it, what took us so long was the desire to “do it right” but we couldn’t figure out what the right thing wa..

Kolmogorov Complexity is kind of a cool idea, at least at first glance. You may know that the information content of an infinite stream of random symbols (measured in bits per symbol) is given by the entropy as described by Claude Shannon . The entropy is all well and good, but it would be nice to have a measure for the information content in a finite length string. Kolmogorov Complexity gives a nice description of the informa....

Javascript in Postgres has gotten a good bit of love lately, part of that is from Heroku Postgres recently adding support for Javascript and part from a variety of people championing the power of it such as @leinweber ( Embracing the web with JSON and PLV8 ) and @selenamarie ( schema liberation with JSON and PLV8 ). In a recent conversation it was pointed out that it seems a bit of headache to have to create your own functions, or a....

I’m just back from the MongoDB Masters Summit hosted by 10Gen in New York City. In just a couple days I was given the opportunity to meet and share knowledge (and fun!) with amazingly talented minds coming from all over the world. I’m back with literally dozen new ideas opportunities and concepts, on which I’ll need to elaborate a little bit. While I cannot comment on the many things the smart minds at 10Gen are working on, rest assured tha..

If you're going to change databases, do it in one go

At Uboot, there was the suggestion that we should change database technology. This was because we would save money with by moving away from Oracle to e.g. MySQL. It was further decided, as we had 200k+ lines of code, and 100+ tables, that if a migration was to occur, it shouldn’t happen “all at once”, but instead one would have some parts of the system migrated with other parts of the system not yet migrated.
