A preliminary Windows Phone 8 build has been available on our servers for the past couple of days. We differentiate between a Windows Phone 7 and 8 version by a build argument that indicates the version (win.ver=8) this will be exposed by the GUI in the next update of the plugin. But now I would like to discuss the architecture and logic behind this port which will help you understand how to optimize the port and maybe even help us with the..

People who know a little bit of statistics - enough to use statistical techniques, not enough to understand why or how they work - often end up horribly misusing them. Statistical tests are complicated mathematical techniques, and to work, they tend to make numerous assumptions. The problem is that if those assumptions are not valid, most statistical tests do not cleanly fail and produce obviously false results.” The first of what I belie..

I blog because I’m lazy. There’s more too it though: In any given day I may explain something to someone, the first time I do this I make a bit of a mental note. The second time I do this, especially within a short time frame I make a physical note of this in the form of the title of a blog post. Once I’m already to a second time of doing this its almost inevitable I’ll continue repeating myself – and its valuable to others. Becoming re....

After three long years with an iPhone 4, I have finally upgraded to a Nexus 4. I had been bored of iOS for a while, having been using it since the iPhone 3G - aside from brief stint with Windows Phone 7 (we don’t talk about that).

Developers often take for granted the level of flexibility and customization that is available within the software they use every day. Consumers of imaging software have traditionally been completely confined to interpret exams a specific way, and frequently in ways that are unintuitive. Every physician, specialist, technologist, med student, and others across the continuum of care has a preference as to not only how exams are laid out, but..

13.2 marks a big release for the Mingle team with the introduction of our new WYSIWYG editor. After hearing that our previous editor was painful for many of our customers, much in the same way with our program backlog, we reached out to understand the root of their pain and the core activity it was affecting.

As a Thoughtworks consultant, I spend a large portion of my time helping organizations solve their challenges and realize their business goals. In the last few years I have focused on helping our clients in their attempts to introduce Continuous Delivery (CD) practices. One of the core challenges that these companies faced, was convincing senior management of the value that CD will bring to the organization.

Hi, These have been a labor of love for me since the launch of Windows Phone in 2010 and it is with great sadness today that I removed both applications from the store. I do not wish to comment any further on the matter except to thank the over half a million people who downloaded the application and all those who have supported, tested, rated and emailed over the years.

One of the main areas of difficulty in elementary probability, and one that requires the highest levels of scrutiny and rigor, is conditional probability. The ideas are simple enough: that we assign probabilities relative to the occurrence of some event. But shrewd applications of conditional probability (and in particular, efficient ways to compute conditional probability) are key to successful applications of this subject. This is the bas..

As soon as I lose pride in something, I stop caring about it being good. Its only value to me is as something that I one day won’t have to do anymore. It always starts with the cutting of one small corner, but that’s all it takes. Pandora’s Box is open and the feature is infected. I cut the next corner with only a faint pang of remorse, and after that I don’t even notice the corners anymore.” A great article and an astute observation not ..

I can’t stress this enough: Do what you love...in between work commitments, and family commitments, and commitments that tend to pop up and take immediate precedence over doing the thing you love. Because the bottom line is that life is short, and you owe it to yourself to spend the majority of it giving yourself wholly and completely to something you absolutely hate, and 20 minutes here and there doing what you feel you were put on this ea..

There is nothing inherent in a set of words that makes them offensive or inoffensive — your reaction is an internal, personal process. ... What type of reaction you have is largely up to you, and if you don’t like your current reactions you can train better ones — this is a core principle of the extremely useful philosophy known as Stoicism.” An interesting article posted to the community blog Less Wrong. Perhaps even more interesting a..

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.” After listening to the fifty-ninth episode of Roderick on the Line, I found the speech written for the president should astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become stranded on the moon. It would be a lonely way to go, sitting on the moon, staring at Earth a few hundred thousand miles away as their oxygen slowly depleted an..

The iPad Mini, like the original iPad, launched to the tune of naysayers questioning the usefulness of a tablet in general, and especially one in such a form factor. After all, who could use the iPad for actual work? It was obviously a content-consumption device rather than a device capable of creating new and interesting things. Obviously. But now we have the iPad 4, and now we have the iPad Mini. And now we have two new ways to create whe..

Paul Miller occasionally sends out dispatches, as The Verge calls them, articles about one thing or another penned by a writer who has forsaken the internet for an entire year. His last piece I read, Offline: Love, Loss, and Dating Without Facebook , was interesting only insofar as a story about an anticlimactic love endeavor can be; his latest article, linked at the top of this post, is much, much better. As Paul chronicled his difficul..

A few days ago I linked to Marco Arment’s response to MG Siegler’s post What If The Google Reader Readers Just Don’t Come Back? without actually reading MG’s article. Introduction Tycho is a build tool for integration between PDE and Maven. Cerner has a long history of working with Eclipse RCP but P2 integration is something of a more recent phenomenon. This post is going to talk about how Cerner is using Tycho, what prompted our transition to Tycho and how we accomplished moving our build to using Tycho. Why we use Tycho The first question when evaluating any tool is asking yourself: “why would I use th..

I have devoted a lot of time to thinking about this, curious as to my motivations behind writing. In the past I said I wrote because I wanted to share my knowledge with others. How noble of me, I suppose. At other times, simply because I love the writer’s craft. This was closer to the real reason, but neither, while true on some level, accurately represented the actual drive that has pushed me to come home after a long day and sit down to w..

Sometimes distractions are good. At the end of a long day spent working on homework, for example, being productive is the last thing I want to do: I would much rather relax and watch a movie than write. Other days, though, during the summer or over break, those are the days I should spend in Instapaper, reading, and in Drafts, writing. But more often than not, those two different types of days that for all intents and purposes should remain..

While one session is doing a “delete then insert”, and another session doing an “update”, the update waits until the “delete then insert” is finished. I recently encountered an issue with cloning a Mercurial repository where it would fail with an obtuse error stating that “[command returned code 255 Mon Mar 25 11:39:55 2013]”. My initial Googling implied that this was caused by a server timeout but the problem persisted even after increasing the timeout on our Apache web server. The clone was always failing on one particular file - a 600Mb binary. (Don’t ask…)

Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand.”—Chinese Proverb Almost all Agile teams have group time for product owners or business analysts to share user stories. In the past few months I have written many essays necessitating the use of citations as a manner through which to lend credence to some datum or another. As you may have surmised from this article’s title though, I believe the current model for determining credible citations to be broken. Take, for example, XKCD comic #976, Citogenesis . In this comic, Randal Munroe once again displays brilliance by showing where citations come from . ..

A friend said this to me today: it’s really odd, why do fans of dynamic languages often have this cult-like approach? It’s an interesting thought. I know many people who love dynamic typing and reject static typing without knowing much about it. (Of course there are many people who love dynamic typing but who do know lots about static typing.) It got me to thinking, I reckon if you only know X and know nothing about non-X, you mig..
