Last night I got an email from Google: My Pixel 4a would be receiving a new update in the coming days. Bit weird I thought, considering this device has been end-of-life since August 2023. It turns out that this update is supposed to improve battery life for the Pixel 4a, but for “some” “impacted devices” this update will “ reduce your battery’s runtime and charging performance ”. And mine’s apparently impacted. Honestly it’s a bum....

We are at an unprecedented point in American history, and I'm concerned we may lose sight of the American Dream.

Year 2024 has come and gone. Number of bones broken this year — only one. Here are some other thoughts on how I kept busy. Personal I bought a motorcycle. It’s a Ducati SuperSport 937 . I didn’t think I would ever like motorcycles, but they’ve very much grown on me. Part of it is escapism from a career where I mostly sit in front of a computer. Another part of it is escapism from traffic and high fuel costs. That and as a machine, it’s....

Searching for VictoriaLogs on search.nixos.org gave me no results, so I ran victorialogs from Docker. But at some point I did search for victorialogs on nixpkgs and realized that the binary is built with victoriametrics.

Apparently if you want to teach kids how to ride a bike you're supposed to take the pedals off first, and now my mind will never be the same again.

Iceland is a deceivingly large country, and although we don’t have a stated goal to drive every road on the island, the Westfijords are a place where that simply makes sense. Around every corner...

When I started at StrongDM five years ago (woah), we had zero automated tests. Last year we had 50,000 tests . Today, around 70% of our code is covered by over 100,000 tests, most of which run on every pull request. What follows is my personal opinion about what constitutes a “good” automated test based on my observation of this colossal increase in test coverage. The goal is not to convince you I’m right, but to draw some contrasts an..

If you decide to be a loving and kind person then you necessarily decide to act in a loving and kind way; how do you do that? More specifically, what does that even mean when we are living in such globally "unkind" times, where, for instance, your energy consumption habits indirectly cause people in other parts of the globe to have to leave their homes after they've become uninhabitable due to climate change?

The Hyperfixed Podcast had a lovely episode recently about tape measures. It started from “why does my tape measure seem to always be off a little bit” and went all the way to the inherent limitations of physical measurement at small scales. In there is an awesome quote by Adam Savage, “I had always had faith in the sanctity and solidity of numbers… and when I got into this… I realized there’s no such thing as a measurement.

I wrote most of this post during the week between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day when enough people in New York have left the city that it makes it quite difficult not to turn introspective. It’s been a pretty big year for me and for this blog, so I thought it would be fun to take a look back on the year as we all move into the second half of the decade. Blog Posts I wrote four long-form blog posts this year: a fun post on Dune for ....

Happy new year! I just posted my 2024 year-in-review post over on the other part of this site. It was fun to sum up the year, and I’m excited to see where 2025 takes me! On to the links: From the webring Tips for New Open Source Maintainers (Robert Lord): A post written in 2014 by a former coworker that found its way to the lobste.rs front page this past week. Like Daniel Doubrovkine’s post I shared last week, I really wish I ha....

how do you block a range of ip addresses with nftables? how do you block ip addresses from a dynamic list? with iptables i could do a little loop to read each line and create an iptables rule: `while read line; do iptables -A INPUT -s $line -j DROP; done < file.txt` is there a better way to do this?

Instead of looking for games to play, this time I decided to set my lines. I won't waste time looking for games to play. The games listed below are already deep and time consuming ones anyway so I will focus on those to relax this year. Dwarf Fortress Last year I was just trying to start/learn it but then leaving it again due to learning curve but this time I'm starting this shit for real. Caves of Qud I got this game recommende....
