Coming many years from now… the even more confusing sequel to Iteration II and Hovertank ! Unit of Time takes a more advanced approach than Iteration II . You’re always free to rewind time, and everything is completely deterministic in all directions and dimensions. Time travel events fork a new timeline, which may have their own surprises. Paradoxes can be made, broken and fixed again. Oh, and you’re not the only agent able to ma..

You are deep in a piece of work and making great progress when a phone call or message breaks you train of thought and derails you. Context switching can have a huge impact on productivity.

My most used command-line commands: 5180 git 777 cd 653 ls 452 go 440 ./invoice 377 dotnet 373 rm 270 vi 225 cat 219 ssh Version control dominates the scene (a gentle middle finger for the youngster - you know who you are - who told me I should not be coding anymore). I also like that the list hints at the new stuff I’ve been working on recently and am excited about.

Happy New Year! If you follow my blog , you may have noticed that I've been hosting it on lmno.lol for a while now, a blogging service I built (invitation-only until now). #+ATTR_HTML: :width 90% Why build a blogging platform There's been a resurgence in blogging of sorts. Wonderful in itself, but the popular platforms are fairly erm unfriendly to their readers. These days, search results might lead you to an interesting blog p....

This is a followup to Today I Learned 2021 , Today I Learned 2022 and Today I Learned 2023 . As a reminder, these are serendipitous discoveries rather than the result of a dedicated search for new knowledge. Looking back, many are from places I’ve visited or major news stories, although the ones which appear a bit random must have been related to something I was doing at the time. 5 Feb 2024: A sapiophile is someone who is primarily ..

The first quarter elapsed. Much happened. Much didn’t. We-who-are-reading-this-right-now are perhaps a bit bruised, disheveled, a little worse for the wear, and horribly hung over. But alive. Except you, Mx. LLM. Who knows what’s next?

I previously posted about identity being key to self-improvement. However, the identity of “animal rights activist” is broad. Having the identity of being an animal rights activist is easier said than done. Using virtues, we can break down identity into distinct features that are easier to understand and implement.

I learned about a new DIY machine to me, the Cody Computer .  It looks kind of fun, but once again, it does make me wonder why it’s so constrained. Extremely low-res graphics, for instance. TBH I would have sneered at this for being low-end when I was about 13 years old. (Shortly before I got my first computer, a 48K ZX Spectrum.) Why isn’t anyone trying to make an easy home-build high-end eight-bit? Something that really pushes t....

I’m determined to make a tradition of this, which is why I find myself in an empty office on New Years Eve trying to remember what’s gone by these last twelve months. I ended “Looking back at 2023” saying “brace for impact” which I had thought meant I was prepared for this year, but in retrospect I wasn’t even close. It’s a common story in start-ups to say “thank god that’s over, next year will be easier!” and be repeatedly wrong, but 2....

I read 100 books this year as a challenge to myself. The hardest part about reading 100 books in a year is fomatting them cleanly afterward on your website. The second hardest part is tracking them all. The actual activity is a cinch. Reading 100 books this year was directly inspired from stories of Theodore Roosevelt, who read one book a day, often multiple. The thing I’ve learned about reading serious literature in quantity is that most..

While most podcasts are available on multiple platforms and either offer an RSS feed or have one that can be discovered , some are only available in the form of a YouTube channel. Thankfully, it's possible to both monitor them for new episodes (i.e. new videos), and time-shift the audio for later offline listening. Subscribing to a channel via RSS is possible thanks to the built-in, but not easily discoverable, RSS feeds. See these ....

This month, a lot of people got worked up about the possibility of mystery drones over New Jersey. We made Orson Welles comparisons . The New York Times reported on drone fever . A U.S. Representative said that the drones were Iran’s doing. New Jersey's best political reporter mewled that this " theory sounds possible ". He wrote that there was "an absence of other plausible theories”. ( Matt Friedman admitted his error four days lat....

I started the NYC Systems Coffee Club in December of 2023. It's gone pretty well! I regularly get around 20 people each month. You bring a drink if you feel like it and you hang out with people for an hour or two. There is no agenda, there is no speaker, there is no structure. The only "structure" is that when the circle of people talking to each other seems gets too big, I break the circle up into two smaller circles so we can get more....

2024 has been an amazing year for my homelab journey. From upgrading hardware to implementing Infrastructure as Code, and exploring new services, here is a recap of my self-hosting adventures this year.

I recently bought an ST NUCLEO-L432KC , a small dev board with an STM32L432KC , a Cortex-M4 micro-controller designed for ultra-low-power applications. 1 These STM32 MCUs come with a proprietary tool for code generation called STM32CubeMX, unfortunately my experience with it was very poor so to speak: I couldn’t even generate a functioning base project for this board. 2 Since ST doesn’t provide ready to use template projects I had....

I've wanted a more recognizable online "brand" for years. I took a stab at creating something myself a few times, but was never satisfied with what I came up with so I finally asked a friend to design a logo for me. The process was delightful and I'm very happy with the results.

I was shocked to discover last week that Noah Gibbs had passed away . Memories are being collected for his family here . 2024 felt more like a proper year than the last . Amol Rajan casually dropped the sickest sample known to man , internet rapper Viper got arrested for kidnapping, then an ITV drama brought the Post Office Horizon scandal to the front of public consciousness making us all wish there were TV dramas about everything else wrong with the country. Willy’s Chocolate Experience took the world by storm with how hilariously abysmal it was. It....
