About two years ago, I switched teams at Google to focus on fully homomorphic encryption (abbreviated FHE, or sometimes HE). Since then I’ve got to work on a lot of interesting projects, learning along the way about post-quantum cryptography, compiler design, and the ins and outs of fully homomorphic encryption. If you’ve heard about FHE and you’re a software person, you’ve probably heard two things: it lets you run programs directly on enc..

I'm replacing my general/util server at home and want to manage VMs on the new host with vm-bhyve . Setting it up is well documented, but running linux VMs still steers folks towards grub, which is not really great. These are just my notes (for later, after I forget) on using cloud images and uefi. This is a supplement to the docs, not a replacement! I created a template, creatively named brian-linux.conf: loader="uefi" cpu=2 ....

I went for a walk in the local pinewood the other day. It’s one of my favorite places, especially the least frequented parts, where one can walk for hours (and risk getting lost) without meeting anyone. I cut it shorter this time as it started to drip rain, and I had nothing with me.

Luck” is one of the most interesting topics to me, and I always find myself paying extra attention to anyone talking about what “luck” is and how it can be somehow controlled. Morgen makes a useful distinction between “lucky” and “repeatable” traits: … a better way to frame luck is by asking: what isn’t repeatable? Did Jeff Bezos get lucky creating Amazon? Not in the same way a lottery winner is lucky, of course. He was visionary and am..

I spent a big part of April on moving parts of my infrastructure and computers to NixOS. As part of this, I devoted some time to better understand NixOS and get a grip on how things work upstream. I also kept up to date with the ongoing situation in the community, a good summary of which can be found here . I don't like the word drama, as I think it downplays the importance of it, but it is what people call it currently. Let's dive in the ..

Reading. Everything about it. Right‽ You wouldn’t be here otherwise. Our intrinsic pleasure is modulated by texts. Good writing enlivens us. Jargon sends us to the dentist, cliché to the physio. The corporeal experience matters, too. Physical comfort. Lighting. Background noise. Scents. Are you reading this with a cup of coffee at hand? A Powers and soda? On the loo? (If it is all three, I am approaching perfection . Call the hospita....

Back when I wrote the first edition of my Linux textbook in 2002, I spent a massive amount of time planning every detail to ensure it had a strong prerequisite concept flow for those new to Linux usage and administration. I added more content on network services and security in the second edition, and dramatically more in the third edition. The fourth edition introduced Systemd, ZFS, and additional security technologies. The fifth edition..

I recently pushed out a new release of Sloc Cloc and Code (scc) with two main pieces of functionality. The first being accurate .gitignore support. The latter being the first new feature to hit the codebase in a long time in the form of a new metric you can access Unique Lines of Code or ULOC. A few years ago exwhyz (who appears to have dropped off the internet) posted a feature request to include this new metric into scc ’s outputs.

We stand on the brink of a precipice. In front of us lies a society driven for the sake of productivity, the mechanics increasingly directed by artificial intelligence to serve corporate interests. Behind us lies centuries of experiments in social organization that provide the historical and material foundation of society. Some failed with communism’s collapse in 1991, while the capitalist experiment shifted to the authoritarian ‘capitalism....
