Introduction In ‘Superintelligence’ , Nick Bostrom presents compelling arguments that once a certain threshold of artificial computer intelligence is reached, and given the ability for self-improvement, such intelligences will escape the possibility of human control, and likely converge on instrumental goals that are incompatible with human survival. I think it is difficult to come away from this book without a strong sense that art....

This is the second installment to my series on machine learning, which builds on my initial post on neural networks “Bridging the gap between neural networks and functions” . In this post, we’ll explore how scaling up dot product operations using matrix multiplication enables modern machine learning. As with the rest of this series, we’ll keep the explanations intuitive yet detailed, aiming to help software engineers build a foundation for....

A few days ago I arrived to Hong Kong. It’s my first time here, and I’ve always wanted to go ever since I watched Rush Hour 2 – one of my favorite movies of all time. (side note: have there actually been any good comedy movies release over the last decade? I honestly don’t remember … Continue reading Left Bali, now in Hong Kong

Julian Casablancas (The Strokes, The Voidz) says Infinity Repeating is “the last Daft Punk song, ever.” The song was recorded in 2013 as a demo and left unpublished until it was included in the 10th-anniversary edition of Random Access Memories released a few weeks ago. The video is a highly addictive masterpiece. Digging into the comments on YouTube, I found that someone attempted a reconstruction of all the citations included . I..

In previous posts , I have shown a severe drawback of the classic Normal approximation for the Mann-Whitney U test: under certain conditions, can lead to quite substantial p-value errors, distorting the significance level of the test. In this post, we will explore the potential of the Edgeworth expansion as a more accurate alternative for approximating the distribution of the Mann-Whitney U statistic.

This one is for the poor soul who is attempting to push their code to Github right now via Jetblue's excellent ViaSat wifi, but confused about why it's hanging: It's because JetBlue blocks connections over port 22 (i.e. SSH). It was previously possibly to add the HTTPS url of your repo as an alt remote, but this no longer works because Github has disabled push on HTTPS auth. Github has a tutorial on using SSH over the HTTPS port , but ..

Normally when you add test coverage to a GitHub repository, the reporting part boils down to a simple call to some API that will post to a third-party external service like Coveralls or Codecov. Many are already on the GitHub Actions Market Place and a few lines of YAML are enough. A Codecov coverage report We had to report the test coverage of a private GitHub repository of a project I am working on at the moment, that could not have ..

Sometimes I get tired of the usual composition, of the trained way of seeing. Lately I tried to make photographs that not only depict nothing in particular, but also guide the attention of the viewer around, showing nothing. The colors guide you in one direction, the focus in another one, and the composition a third. Its only value lies in the movement of the viewers eyes, in the choreography of the gaze.

This is a guest post from Jamie Tanna. Enjoy. Dear new developer, Our jobs and lives are full of repetition, and one of the beauties of being developers is that we can take steps to automate away some of the repetition. Learning to automate, or at least minimise, repetition optimises your work. You can get … Continue reading Learn how to build tools →

Regular readers of my blog1 know I have been planning to write on my recent contract contributing to Quinn, the popular Rust implementation of the QUIC protocol. I originally intended to write a deep-dive into the QUIC features I implemented, but the blog post took a life of its own and ended up as a short essay on being paid to learn. Enjoy! Taking on the project When Stormshield2 reached out to me with a proposal to work on Quinn, I felt ..

Fenyman had a concept of 12 questions which he contemplated for much of his professional career, constantly adding new facts and insights to each category over time. This allowed him to progress along many axes at once over long time periods until the accumulation of understanding in any given question reached the point where others considered it a breakthrough. Here are the 6 questions I'm thinking about these days.
