This is the Beginner's General for beginners' questions. If any of you have a simple question, and a suitable thread doesn't already exist, just post it here and someone will probably try to answer it. Remember to do some research before asking a question; no one wants to answer a question that a simple search can already resolve.

What's your favorite way of doing IPC between programs that you control but wrote in different programming languages? - Pipes, UNIX sockets, or local TCP? - HTTP/1, HTTP/2, ZeroMQ, or nanomsg? - Protocol Buffers, JSON, or msgpack?

Around this year’s Black Friday I noticed the “Hama 176584 WiFi LED-Bulb” on sale for as low as €2.49 with free shipping here in Germany. About a month ago I decided to run a little experiment with tax loss harvesting: I was going to sell my shares of Microsoft at a loss and then rebuy them a month later, thus giving me the ability to claim the loss on my taxes next year.

yubiuser has released a new updated for PADD, to 3.10.0, and this update I think is quite important because it fixes the “flickering refresh” that was introduced with the v3.9.0. So I updated also my modified version with more info that fits 800x480px screens. You can download it the file from GitHub: padd.sh v3.10.0 for 800x480px display Be careful because now PADD auto-center itself in bigger screen/terminal, so you need to change ..

Every so often, I download something off the internet that is delivered as a multitude of files in a root folder, with no kind of sorting applied to it. Big sets of games for the PICO-8 engine, perhaps, or an assorted collection of music files. Often times these sets, especially if they are games, will go onto an embedded device like a modified games console, a flash cart, or onto an emulation handheld, which makes browsing 7349 files a nig....

New Service, AnonymousOverflow ~cobra Wed, 28 Dec 2022 I have set up AnonymousOverflow on ~vern. AnonymousOverflow is a front-end for StackOverflow. I have been waiting for quite a while for a project like this, and it has been released only a few hours ago. It doesn’t support user pages yet, but that’s to be expected with such a new project. Thanks for being part of ~vern!

She’s also done a lot of cool stuff with zero knowledge proofs. In previous articles, we’ve discussed techniques used in Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) schemes. I tend to shy away from publishing cases, so Stoner has been resting on my yeah-maybe-one-day list for years. Over time I stumbled on notable mentions that kept the book on the fringe of my attention zone. Then one day, I read a brief and intriguing [review][2] in Giovanni Zagni’s excellent newsletter, Incertezze . Like me, Zagni suffers from the stay-away-from-editorial-cases idiosyncrasy, but he finally gave in, read the thing, reread ..

I didn’t really expect to have a post this late in the year but here we go. Lets go through some assumptions that were broken for me recently. Not just my own through perhaps some other peoples assumptions too. I have been working with ActivityPub for a bit. I want to run my own server, beyond installing some 3rd party. I want to build my own from scratch. However this rapidly exposed some problems with testing ActivityPub.

Since making a sudden leap from computer science to academic medicine about seven years ago, I haven’t programmed as much. I love what I do in medicine and biology, and I love helping patients. But, I have missed programming – and programming languages. Then I came across the Advent of Code on Mastodon – a series of daily two-part puzzles for programmers that runs for 25 days. On a whim, I solved the Day 1 puzzle using awk . ....
