There are few videos that make me take notes, but this one is an exception. In fact, this post was massaged into prose from my original notes. The gist of the video is that every person, project, platform, and company has values. And in his opinion, the relevant values for the software industry are: Values Approachability Integrity Robustness Availability Maintainability Safety Compatibility Measurability Security Compos..

Introduction Every man-made thing in the world needs to be designed in order to be built. Of course, DIY projects are often designed as they are built, but other than that, most things are designed before they are built. And designing a thing is hard. But as it turns out, designing a thing is easy compared to what I do when I am building a programming language. At first glance, it seems that designing a programming language is ea..

Note: This blog post is for Max, my youngest son, so he can learn what I did to fix this problem. So my youngest son got a new Windows gaming PC for this Christmas from his Grandmother (thank you Nanny) and when he started it up, all he saw was this: The normal diagnostic steps of: Pull the graphics card and use motherboard graphics Check that the RAM is seated Double check all cables are connected Change the boot order options and....

While talking about thinking about tests and testing in software engineering recently, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are (at least) two major ideas and goals that people have when they test or talk about testing. This post aims to outline what I see as these two schools, and explore some reasons engineers coming from these different perspectives can risk talking past each other. Two reasons to test Testing for correctness The first..

Exactly 9 years ago, Hibernating Rhinos had a major breakthrough. We moved to our own offices for the first time. Before that, I was mostly working from a home office of clients’ locations. Well, I say we , but I mean I . At the time, the change mostly involved me having to put on some shoes and going out of the house to work alone in a big empty office. The rest of the team at the time was completely remote. I got the office because I....

Have you heard about the Internet of Things (IoT) ? It is basically about making devices “smart” and hooking them up to the Internet. And it’s a terrible idea. Don’t believe me? A hacker broke into a Google Nest and cranked up the heat. A baby monitor was hacked, and the hacker said that he was going to kidnap the baby. Another two hackers broke into Ring cameras and talked to young girls . Remember this video ? “On th..

Photo Credit - Lisa Meece ; Thank You) Today is December 23rd and I am writing in the wee hours, that wonderfully still time when all is quiet in the world. Between the early hour and the time of year, I've found that this always makes me thoughtful. Many of the people I know and care for are terribly hard on themselves. They seem to feel that if they aren't perfect, they need to beat themselves up for that lack of perfection. And I....

I have two 4K TVs at home, one in the bedroom and one in my living room. Both have consoles attached. One has a PS4 Pro and one has a Nintendo Switch and both are great. However, I also have a gaming PC in my office, which is quite powerful compared to any home console Mine is equipped with a RTX 2080 TI GPU, and a 9900K processor, so it can play pretty much any new game at 4K with a solid 60 fps on high settings.

I was chatting with a team member of mine about their career growth plans a few weeks ago and while we were on the topic he mentioned he’d always appreciate book recommendations for growing into engineering management. I thought over it a bit and decided this would be a great topic to share with everyone else. So without further delay, here are my favorite books I’ve read to grow in my engineering management career in no particular order.

Photo Credit - Lisa Meece ; Thank You) During last week's offsite, my boss let us know that he wanted to go down the OKR rabbit hole in 2020. OKR stands for Objectives and Key Results and is a management philosophy promoted by John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins who most famously got it internalized by Google with great success. According to Wikipedia : Objectives and key results is a framework for defining and tracking objectives ....

This year was flat-out awesome! I can’t think of many years in the past decade that had the same amount of academic, physical, and personal fulfillment all in one year! On the academic side, I presented a 12-week Linux+ webinar series at night to IT instructors worldwide for the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) Instructor Network. This, of course, fit well since I just finished writing the 5th edition of my Linux tex..

Introduction This second post of the series about my graduation project focusses on the De-Dispersion methods that are considered and their algorithms. These build on the models presented in part 1 . Equation numbers are numbered through in all parts, so references can be towards part 1. Coherent versus In-Coherent De-Dispersion De-dispersion is the process of reversing the effects of frequency dispersion of a signal, in this case the s..

Seven years since the first commit, I am glad to announce that Eve v1.0 has been released. Check it out on PyPI. If you are using Eve, Cerberus, FatturaElettronica for .NET or any other one of my open source projects in a revenue-generating product, it would make business sense to sponsor my open source development. Learn how to do that at my GitHub Sponsors page . Happy holidays to all of you and have a wonderful start in the new..
