I'm going to poke my head in here to reassure everyone that the game is making steady progress. The environment now turns transparent when it gets in the way of the camera, and the player has some nifty new moves and mechanics, plus a very shnazzy looking power bar to indicate how much "juice" you have to perform special moves. The latest addition here is the skill roll, which prevents you from slowing down or dying when falling long distan..

New cursor_bind_capture_destination parameter in Oracle 11.2.0.2

I just noticed that there’s a new cursor_bind_capture_destination parameter in Oracle 11.2.0.2 (which is really more like Oracle 11gR3 version because of the large amount of new features in it, as opposed to just bugfixes). This parameter allows you to save some SYSAUX tablespace disk space – if the occasionally captured bind variable values (from V$SQL_BIND_DATA) take too much space. Normally these bind values (in a packed RAW form) ar..

Holy frozen Batman, I’m leaving tomorrow! I still have a lot I want to do! I was just getting into the swing of things! But I am also excited to leave. A colleague always says, “the best days at the South Pole are the day you arrive and the day you leave.” After all these years, that feels as true as ever. I know my time is short today because I have to: Pack (bags out by the station door known as “Destination Zulu” by 7 pm) Sort my ga....

I've recently been working for a colleague and a client on implementing a website and ecommerce site in Business Catalyst. Business Catalyst is a web publishing platform originally developed by a couple of Australians in 2004, but was acquired by Adobe Systems in 2009. It promises to be an all-in-one solutions for business websites (there's your red flag right there) with tight integration of it's online store, tracking and analytics. But t..

Back in the Galley again, the smell of dozens of lunch burgers grilling and the very same licorice spice Stash tea I always drink here setting the olfactory tones for this post. Almost exactly twenty years ago, when I was working at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, I was preparing to return to Madison to take some art classes and I emailed some physics colleagues there to see if there was any student work to be had. Colleagues Bob Morse and ....

The Android platform is the latest buzz in the smartphone world. I have previously written on why I prefer Android over iPhone. In this article, we will talk a little bit about what it’s like to develop native applications for Android. Android SDK uses Java. I know Java but it’s not my favorite. After working with Python and Django for months, going back to Java isn’t exactly easy. But it’s not undoable either. Being from the Czech repu....

Apple recently unveiled their newest venture. It’s called the App Store, and I’m sure you’ve heard of it. It’s a place on your computer that lets you download and discover new applications. Just like the package manager on most Linux distributions. Except Linux has had ‘app stores’ for years. Welcome to 21st century computing, Apple.

Tuesday, Jan. 18 2011 1:14 a.m. UTC Running out of time on this satellite pass for a blog post. Took tons of photos today… this morning we had a tour of the satellite antennas at the very end of Summer Camp. The weather was fantastic, maybe -15F with no wind and high clouds which shed a magic crystalline light on everything. Satellite technician James and his winter-over colleague Glen showed us around, with some of the bes....

At the start of the quarter, I found out that instead of charging by the credit hour, my school charges the same rate for twelve to eighteen credit hours. Since I was only taking fourteen credit hours, I decided to take a hiking class. I know, I know, hiking in winter? Yes, it was cold. But I met a few people, had fun, and got some exercise.

Sunday, Jan. 16 2011 11:32 p.m. UTC Marathon finish line at the Geographic Pole It’s a little before the lunch rush here in the galley and I’m using a bit of the quiet time here to write today’s post. From where I sit I can see nearly half the entire horizon — as close to a completely flat line as you can get, apart from being on an ocean-going boat, I suppose. There is a meditation technique in which one raises one eyes to whatev....

Sunday, Jan. 16 2011 1:11 a.m. UTC I just got back from running in/photographing my first South Pole marathon: temperature -18F, windchill -41F. Every year there is a Christmas Day race here called the Race Around the World. The winner gets to go to McMurdo and run in a marathon there (and usually wins, since they are trained at high altitude). But flights yesterday got cancelled because all the Hercules C-130s had to go out to fi....

I was trying to find a good function/library which I could use to sanitize HTML using Javascript. Like many before me, I've spent a good number of programming hours/days/weeks in the past trying to write my own regular expressions to do this. But I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy to do that ever again. The techniques for XSS are many and advanced and you'll be fighting an uphill battle if you think you can "roll your own". I wanted to do..

One thing that many people don’t realize is that the foundation of the video game industry, including terminology and techniques were solidified in the 1970s and early 1980s during the home video game movement! And the home gaming console that led to the most development in this area was the least technologically advanced one for its time: The 1977 Atari Video Computer System (VCS), later known as the Atari 2600.
