As coding becomes solved by AI, developer tools need to be designed for agent users as much as human ones. "Agent experience" is a problem I have been focusing on at Chroma. The first step is legible ...

pkgmirror is an open-source, self-hosted Zig toolchain and package mirror service so your builds no longer rely on third-party services or Microsoft GitHub. Mach now hosts its own pkgmirror at pkg.hexops.org . Features Zig toolchain mirroring : acts as a caching reverse proxy for Zig toolchain downloads from ziglang.org Package mirroring (optional) - instead of writing GitHub URLs in your project’s build.zig.zon, use your own ser....

I am risking the one full-time paid developer of Haiku popping up here and shouting at me, because he's done that a few times before and even written to my editor-in-chief to complain. Sadly for him, my former EIC was a hardcore techie -- it's how I met him, long before either of us worked there -- and he was on my side. https://www.theregister.com/2023/01/11/haiku_beta_4/ Unix is a 1960s design for minicomputers. Hey lain, I have a CRT TV I want to repair. It's a Sansui DTV2798 that I had sitting in my closet for a few months. Originally, the problem was that it had severe distortion on the horizontal scanline. It would distort and add static to about a third of the screen as the scanline scrolled the image. This would last for 15 or 20 minutes and then the screen, displaying in color, would rapidly flicker between black & white and color. Then t....

Google Search is trash now. Sometimes it is nice to just write things in natural language and get a response, but for actually searching the web it's absolutely worthless. Well not to sound like a wage slave but if you're similarly frustrated check out Mojeek. I think I tried it a long time ago and didn't like it, but they've been doing something right because right now the experience of using it is about the way Google was ~7-8 years ..

I always look at unit prices: how much do I get for my dollar? But that assumes I can use all of it. The manufacturer puts "12oz" whether I'll be able to get the full 12oz or only 6oz. For years I kept trying different expense tracking apps. At first they always seemed promising. I would install one, enter a few transactions, maybe explore the charts and reports. For a week or two I would even use it consistently. Then gradually I stopped opening the app. Not because it was bad. Many of them were actually great. The problem was different: they expected a mindset I simply do not have.

I spent four hours on a Tuesday night debugging a 30-second API call. Four hours. The call touched 12 services — auth, inventory, pricing, three different caching layers, a recommendation engine, two legacy adapters, and a handful of internal APIs that nobody remembered writing. Logs told me nothing useful. Metrics showed elevated latency somewhere in the pricing path, but “somewhere” isn’t actionable at 11pm when your on-call phone won’t s..

Keeping sponsor lists up-to-date across multiple READMEs and websites is tedious - so I wrote a tool to automate it.

This lecture was given by Tomas Furmark, Professor of Psychology at Uppsala University. My rough notes are below. Note that all of this, including the question/answer sections, is paraphrased - not exact quotes.

I just gave a talk at DEVx giving a very early alpha preview of poprocks, a module providing simple golang primitives for building and working with Firecracker microvms. While it can be used serverside, I talk about utilizing it instead as a client side solution for isolated, malicious actor “safe” execution environments - especially for AI agents.

Since the introduction of SwiftUI, the MV pattern has been discussed in online forums about SwiftUI architecture. Its proponents sell it as a new pattern that aligns with how SwiftUI is intended to be used, while patterns like MVVM are allegedly at odds with the framework. In this article, I will show how the MV ... Read more The post The Myth of the MV pattern: Why SwiftUI developers just reinvented MVC appeared first on Matteo Manf..

After learning Apple killed off FireWire (IEEE 1394) support in macOS 26 Tahoe , I started looking at alternatives for old FireWire equipment like hard drives, DV cameras, and A/V gear. I own an old Canon GL1 camera, with a 'DV' port. I could plug that into an old Mac (like the dual G4 MDD above) with FireWire—or even a modern Mac running macOS < 26, with some dongles —and transfer digital video footage between the camera and an appli..

I’ve been building this at Apple since June 2024.
