I recently ported the Hardcaml_step_testbench library , one of the libraries that we use at Jane Street for Hardcaml simulations, from using monads to using algebraic effects, a new OCaml 5 feature. This blog post walks through what algebraic effects are, why you should consider using them in lieu of monads, and how to actually work with them using the Handled_effect library . One thing I’ve come to believe is that most of what can be don..

Back in October 2024, I got my hands on a Snapdragon Dev Kit . With a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite ARM64 CPU (the fastest model!), 32GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, it ran Windows 11 for ARM lightning fast. So I made it my daily driver, and it stayed that way until very recently. I even wrote a review of it one year later back in October.

Another year, another wrap-up! I’m an absolute broken record on these things, but you haven’t read one in a year so maybe you don’t remember that I write basically the same thing every year. 2025 was definitely even better than 2024, which is hard to believe. Before I sit down to write these posts I […]

I really haven’t got much time or energy at the moment (I spent most of the Christmas break with an extremely painful back, which was exhausting and frustrating), but I wanted to post a very brief list of books I read this year. I read a total of 44 books this year, which includes re-reads […]

How have your guys' homelab setups been running? Are you doing anything new or setting up new services you'll actually use? I've spent the day trying to get my R510 to recognize this H200 I flashed and threw in earlier and to start iDRAC6. My plan is to run the machine with proxmox and ZFS for a house-wise NAS, jellyfin instance, and pi-hole for the people in my apartment who dont want to set up dnscrypt but want some blacklisting. I've ..

Wouldn’t it be nice to pull out the key ideas and action points from a book you have just read or are considering purchasing? Maybe get a reminder of the story line of a fiction book you read years ago?

In a New Year’s resolution-driven attempt to un-Microsoft-ify my life , I’m moving all of my repositories over from GitHub (owned by Microsoft) to sourcehut (owned by some dude ). This blog was the first repo to make the switch and was previously hosted via GitHub Pages, and now uses sourcehut pages instead. Here’s the config I created to make the CI-driven deployment work:

I’ve always been curious, how do you and your team at REVSYS prioritize what to work on? Obviously client work pays the bills, but your team has been heavily involved in the Python and Django community for years, either serving on boards/working groups/committees/etc or helping maintain a myriad of open source libraries and helpful community sites. I figure each person has a certain level of autonomy to prioritize, but do ya'll have somethi..

Unbridled Enthusiasm Year 2004. It's my first year of university. I just started studying computer science and software engineering. I know nothing about the field. I only got my first computer 2 years ago. I was a geeky kid, but not a computer geeky one. Few months into my studies I'm sitting at the lecture. During the break I talk to my classmate about computers - I know very little since I didn't have them growing up and my family cou....

If you think about emails as if they’re anything but the digital equivalent of a postcard–that is to say, postcards provide zero confidentiality–then someone lied to you and I’m sorry you had to find out from a furry blog that sometimes talks about applied cryptography. At the end of 2025, at the 39th Chaos Communications […]
