There I was, sitting in a Project Management class, watching my professor demonstrate Microsoft Project; the same software I had just spent my summer adding features to. Some education happens in classrooms; the best happens in the wild.” One of the strange things of college, is that before I started, I already had worked for some time in the field, as well as had some coding for some years before I got in.

Finally, after many months of wanting to do it, I made it: I moved my Umami instance from a VPS with Docker on DigitalOcean to a pod on PikaPods. Introducing Umami is a great privacy-respecting analytics service that can be self-hosted, lightweight, and detailed enough for me. PikaPods , on the other hand, is a great service that allows you to create pods (like Docker containers) with many open-source applications, at a very low pri..

Around 2003, my mother had a laptop: the Compaq Armada 1592DT. It ran Windows Me , the worst Windows to ever exist, whopping 96 MB of RAM, and a 3 GB hard drive. My mother used it for important stuff, and I played games on it. Given the limitations of the 3 GB hard drive, this soon lead to a conflict: there was no room to store any new games! I did my best to make additional room by running the disk cleaner utility, disabling unneces....

Do you run Rails or pure Ruby applications on Heroku? If so, it’s important to be aware of upcoming end-of-life (EOL) dates for both your stack and your Ruby version. The Heroku-20 stack, built on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, will reach EOL for standard support in April 2025. Ruby 2.7 has already passed its EOL, meaning […] The post Migrating Your Ruby Apps to the Latest Stack appeared first on Heroku .

I really don’t want this to happen, but imagine you return from vacation. You learn there is a naval + air blockade around Taiwan. People are buying electronics like they bought toilet paper in 2020. Retailers are out of stock, and new iPhones are selling on eBay for triple their usual price. Supply chains will take multiple years to recover. You need your current phone to stay happily working until then.

I’ve long since embraced AI integrations into my AI, and I’ve experimented with several of the new app builders. I’m going to avoid commenting on the “vibe” coding meme that’s going on, I will say I’ve enjoyed some of the efficiencies gained. A few months ago per the suggestion of several peers I swapped from VS Code w/ Copilot to Cursor. It took some adjustment of workflow to incorporate Cursor int..

Verlyn Flieger on the late addition of Tolkien’s most iconic characters: Hobbits were no part of Tolkien’s original plan. They entered rather late and through a side door, as the unexpected central characters in a children’s story, The Hobbit which Tolkien invented for his own children but which found an immediate and lasting worldwide audience. And of which The Lord of the Rings was the commissioned, longed-awaited and trebly successf..

Little elephant company — 7 people working out of a random house — 2013 I know we haven’t paid you for 30 days, but would you be willing to float another month? No, sorry, I’m out. Ok, sad to see you are not loyal to the company. No pay, no work It was the end of 2013; I’d gone two paychecks without pay. The client still hadn’t paid, I wasn’t about to start working for free.

I went to the most fascinating lecture about the history of the nuclear bomb last week. I’m not even going to try to shorten my notes. I want to remember it in as much detail as I possibly can. As before, my own post-lecture note interjections are [L: Highlighted like this] (I also highlighted a couple of questions I’d asked during the lecture in the same format).

Brucebase entry for the show: http://brucebase.wikidot.com/1975#050275 |
Are you a big Springsteen fan like me? Then you already know this bootleg—heck I had a vinyl copy 45 years ago. If not, I can tell you this is a clean recording of a classic ‘75 show that took place a few months before Born to Run was released. One of the interesting aspects … Continue reading Springsteen at the Main Point, Feb. 1975

At GopherCon2023 I presented a talk about how I built a custom index for searchcode . In there somewhere I mentioned that having a visualization of how the search works is something I would like to add in. With some free time on a weekend rather than “wasting” time playing a game I decided to actually build it, and as is the current trend on the internet attempted to vide code it, at least for the UI portion anyway.

DeepSeek released another cool paper expanding on reinforcement learning for LLM alignment. Building off of their prior work (which I talk about here), they introduce two new methods. The first - Rejective Fine-Tuning (RFT) - They have a pre-trained model produce N responses. Then the collected responses are combined in a prompt wherein the model is instructed to produce principles for evaluating the responses, critiques of each response, a..

Moving beyond triple-bracket kernel launches to production-ready CUDA: proper error handling, CUDA Driver API, cooperative groups, and inline PTX for robust GPU code.

At last, here’s the final installment of the JIT calculator saga! In previous blog posts, I presented the JIT calculator challenge and followed up with my own solution. Today we’ll get to look back on the submissions sent by some readers who were nerd-sniped into cracking the puzzle. As you can imagine, people are creative and came up with things I didn’t expect, like using Cranelift to generate code… That was a pleasant surprise!

The personal histories involved are highly relevant and they are one of the things that get forgotten in boring grey corporate histories. Bill Gates didn't get lucky: he got a leg up from mum & dad, and was nasty and rapacious and fast, and clawed his way to industry dominance. On the way he climbed over Gary Kildall of Digital Research and largely obliterated DR. Ray Noorda of Novell was the big boss of the flourishing Mormon ....
