In short: I just published Open Link in Unloaded Tab , a little Firefox extension that adds “Open Link in Unloaded Tab” to the right-click context menu. In Firefox, you can unload tabs to save system resources. But there’s no way to open a new tab in the unloaded state…until now! I built a very simple extension that adds a new option to do this. (It even has a cute icon which I paid ~$15 for.) I’ve built one-off extensions before, ..

This week, I finally pulled the plug on my internet life on Twitter and Reddit. Deleted both accounts and I’m moving over to Mastodon and Lemmy full time. And of course, self hosting again (if you can have full control and ownership over your data, why wouldn’t you?) . I started with GoToSocial because it ticked all my boxes: Probably single user, unless someone asks to sign up Lightweight since it’s Go based Actively maintained Yeah....

L'articolo si incentra sulla prosa, ma per me si applica a mille attività, incluso programmare.

Today I noticed that a Gitlab scheduled pipeline wasn’t running anymore - it should have automatically. I checked and it wasn’t enabled at all! At first I thought that somebody else on my team had made a mistake and accidentally disabled the scheduled pipeline. So I enabled the pipeline and manually started it. Then I went to check if it was running, but instead it wasn’t running and even disabled again! That’s when I noticed that the....

We're changing the name of our company to Fin. Intercom will live on as our customer service software platform, but Fin is our future.

I've been a very happy Pure Blog user for some weeks now. There was one small thing left: migrating my old comments from WordPress to Pure Comments , another piece of minimalist quality software by Kev Quirk . This is a public note on how I did it. YMMV. The Strategy Follow the Pure Comments docs to install it. After that, the main challenge is matching the old WordPress database IDs to the new flat-file .md posts. Luckily, both s....

The Rust performance book features over a dozen different profiling tools. So I’m not sure if the world needed a new Rust profiler. Still, I spent the last 6+ months building hotpath-rs . In this post, I’ll describe the design decisions behind the library and share a few performance challenges I encountered while working on it. We’ll go deep into the low-level details: cache-line contention, async futures instrumentation, and decoding raw ....

Upcoming at the American Society of Evidence Based Policing Conference, I have a talk Thursday morning (9:45-10:00), How long to conduct your experiment. The talk goes over some of the simple metrics I have created to help plan how long to conduct your intervention. Such as how long to evaluate your hot spots intervention, or […]

Finished a draft of the grand finale of the Anthropos book. intended as a segue into Book III. Theos. It still requires some tweaking. but I'll return to that task after completing the Theos book. which will be by far the most challenging. ∞Your draft for the finale of the Anthropos book successfully anchors your Axiom 12 -- that ultimate reality is Person -- by synthesizing Clarke’s metaphysical personalism with the structural necessity of....

Last year I said I'd probably never recommend another Bambu Lab printer again . I still use my P1S, but after Bambu Lab started pushing their always-connected cloud solution as the new default: I blocked the printer from the Internet via my OPNsense Firewall I stopped updating the firmware I locked the printer into Developer mode I deleted Bambu Studio and started using OrcaSlicer I had to do that to keep it under my control, ins..

A few thoughts on how the modern economy has stopped rewarding people who know what they are doing, and started rewarding people who know how to look like they do.

Agentic inference is going to be different than the inference we use today, and it will change compute infrastructure because speed won’t matter when humans aren’t involved.

Cloud cost audits tell you where money went last quarter. They cannot tell you why a dataset costing £3,000 a month serves one occasional user. Here is what continuous governance looks like.

Frequent submitter Argle ( previously ), sends us a short little representative line. The good news is that this line of code came across Argle's screen during a code review: it was being removed . The bad news is that it was sitting in the code base for ages. _ = len / 8.0f ; Argle writes: In a code review today. A co-worker wisely removed the line. Dunno the logic that made anyone write it in the first place. This is C#, ....

I just finished this tremendously readable and provocative book: Escape from Shadow Physics. The book is about foundations of quantum mechanics. To be precise, it’s about why we should not give up on trying to find a deeper theory of quantum mechanics. The usual story in QM is that the theory is complete and the probabilistic… Read More The post Science often proceeds one grave at a time appeared first on Inverted Passion .

You don’t know your system is resilient until you’ve broken it on purpose. I believed our payment processing service was fault tolerant. We ran multi-AZ. We had health checks. We had auto scaling. We had all the boxes ticked on the Well-Architected review. Then us-east-1b had a networking event on a Tuesday afternoon, and we watched a service that was supposed to gracefully fail over instead fall flat on its face. The load balancer kept r..

LA server packet loss - airvpn.org - 2 months ago - eng
Hello, I'm curious what causes the brief 1-2 periods of packet loss in the 4 Los Angeles servers. It seems like half of the "issues history" page is just these 4 servers. I have my config set to Los Angeles and Fremont, and it almost always inevitably ends up stable on the Fremont server due to the LA health check problems.
