As I mentioned in my June blog post , AI is here to stay. It will be something we take for granted in several years as the tools we use evolve to seamlessly accommodate it. Until then, we should still avoid getting caught up in current AI hype, and no – there won’t be future job titles of AI prompt engineer once it becomes as ubiquitous as Googling. Since AI will overhaul tech-related industries long before others, it’s important tha..

Happy new year! I am in the middle of converting searchcode.com over to SQLite, which is a far more interesting future post, and as a result had to rewrite some of the core service logic. The previously implemented code had grown over time so I decided to start fresh. Of course the catch of this is introducing regressions, which I did by stripping out some of the caching logic I had implemented.

So, as ya might've known, our Invidious instance was down for a long time; couldn't get't connecting w the DB anymore. We solved't by running't outside a container which somehow made that work, but anyway, 't feels like we can't really run that software well anymore. Additionally, Youtube's been making't harder n harder circumventing their rate limits, n honestly we can't keep up w that, especially when the Invidious patches take ages'a ups....

At some point in the past, I created a tool for a project (not relevant for this post). This tool generated multiple artefacts from an input (embeddings file, JSON metadata, and other files). The project was successful, but one thing I didn’t like about the “tool” I wrote was that it was not easy to manage those artefacts. The artefacts had to be uploaded and downloaded to some remote(s). Apart from that, the code required all the files to ..

Here we go again for another post of this blog’s irregular column, entitled Django’s Friday Tips. Today let’s address a silent issue, that any of you that have formerly worked with internationalization (i18n) almost certainly already faced. You add a string that must be translated: You then execute the manage.py makemessages --locale pt command, go […]

There are certain kinds of experiences that most human beings know very little about because a) they are rare, b) they can only be felt from the "inside", i.e., by the people who have them, and c) not all of those people choose to, or are good

Learned: if you’re working remotely, but you want to bring back the daily experience of going to an office with some friendly people, maybe don’t start a coworking space . It probably won’t work. You can recruit a half-dozen friends who like you, and they’ll show up occasionally, but not daily. You can offer Aeron chairs and tasty snacks. You can make it more-or-less free. Same result.

You can’t reinvent the universe. If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. Carl Sagan, Cosmos All of us live and work within systems, and each of those systems operates within further systems, and those within systems further yet, and so on until stardust, spirituality, and semantics. Even just a few hierarchical steps represents fractal complexity. Any time you aim to replace or re....

I get a lot of newsletters, and I love them. They often contain a wealth of deep insight that I can't easily find while browsing the web. Yes, there are RSS feeds that publish their protected content, but since I spend so much time in my email, I effectively use it as a way of browsing. I really wanted a way to get quick summaries of the newsletters I read, so I built one.

Ever had a long-running command in terminal but forget to check back on it? I’ve used do_long_think; notify-send "thing finished" in the past to help. I can do other stuff then be interrupted when it finishes. Annoyingly that doesn’t work if you’re over an SSH connection, in a DevContainer or using Codespaces . To fix that up I’m now using WezTerm ’s user-var-changed event, and it’s sooo good! Any window in WezTerm which write..
