Disclaimer: views expressed are my own and are not endorsed by my employer. In 2019 we had roughly zero automated tests at StrongDM . We did manual quality assurance testing on every release. Today we have 56,343 tests. Anecdotally, the rate of bugs and failures has not decreased by a commensurate amount. Instead I think it correlates with focused efforts we’ve made at various times to either ship big new features (resulting in many u..

Simon Wilson, who’s recently been my go-to person for all AI-related stuff, has an excellent 2023 AI round-up on his website. 2023 was the breakthrough year for Large Language Models (LLMs). I think it’s OK to call these AI—they’re the latest and (currently) most “interesting development in the academic field of Artificial Intelligence that dates back to the 1950s. Here’s my attempt to round up the highlights in one place! The link..

Wow. What a year. There were many challenges and I accomplished little. The irony that it was the year of the rabbit is not lost on me. I’d like to thank all my friends and various associates for being a guiding light this year, as it would have been a lot more harrowing to do this one alone. Anyways, good riddance - here’s an outline of what I intend to accomplish by the end of this year. Resolutions, if you will.

While my go-to personal computer has been a Mac for a long time I’ve used Linux (mainly Ubuntu ) off and on since probably Hoary (5.04). I remember back then you could ask Canonical to send you CDs, and I’d order packs of them. There’s probably still a few around my parents’ house! Getting it to install was one of my early computer achievements, as I was only just getting into writing software back then and it was all on Windows at the tim..

This issue of the newsletter marks three years of Disappearing Moment . I realize that publishing a short, monthly newsletter isn’t a heavy lift. Or, rather, it shouldn’t be. As with most things , I’ve made it more difficult than necessary. From the beginning, I fought any artifice that would save me from being honest and vulnerable. I channeled some of my favorite writers. Steve Albini, Mandy Brown, Stacia Brown, Warren Buffett, Eve Ew....

It's been roughly 9 months since I experimented with wiring the ChatGPT API to an Emacs comint buffer in chatgpt-shell . ChatGPT's request-response nature maps fairly well to a shell's mode of interaction. In the past, I've also talked about blurring the lines between shell and editor . That is, using Emacs as your shell ( eshell being my favourite) enables compounding goodies from both shell and editor when both are used from th....

In the year 2023, AI took center stage in the media, stirring up discussions about whether it was mere hype or real progress. However, the concept of non-human intelligence isn’t a recent fascination; it has been a dream since ancient times. As we learned more about how neurons communicate through electronic pulses in our brains, it seemed plausible to simulate our “intelligence” with similar electronic circuits. The term “machine intellige..

It turns out it's really easy to add a click-to-expand element (also a dropdown or accordion element) in Markdown + HTML without any JavaScript, since it's part of the spec . This: < details > < summary > Click here to expand summary > Surprise! details > turns into this: Click here to expand Surprise! Of course you can make this fancier with CSS and whatnot. But the core action is built ..

2023 was certainly a year . Our Prime Minister got fined for not wearing a seatbelt, Paul O’Grady’s passing left millions of dog lovers and radio fans mourning, and shortly after some bloke got crowned king in a ceremony full of high-definition horse manure. The long-running series of Governmental cock-ups continued as they lost more seats and dithered from crisis to crisis, the usual. Also the F-22 got it’s first air-to-air kill against a....

No, not that Avatar. And not the other one either. This post is about avatar.png, a handful of lines of PHP that have inspired me for a long time. Around 2011 or 2012 a friend of mine, Andrew Kvalheim , blew my mind when he made his Skype profile picture display the IP address of the computer I was using. It might have looked a bit like this.
