A very brief update about the progress of searchcode server. Currently I am in the middle of reworking how the index is built and maintained. The idea being I want to add zero downtime index rebuilds which requires a blue/green index strategy. I’m going to write down my notes from wrangling with the installation here for future reference and hopefully this helps someone else too. Once upon a time, we had a single monolith of software, one mothership running everything. At SoundCloud, the proliferation of microservices came from moving functionality out of the mothership. There are plenty of benefits to splitting up features in this way. We want the same benefits for our data as well, by defining ownership of datasets and ensuring that the right teams own the right datasets.

PCs lead us indoors. Smartphones lead us into isolation. The Apple Watch is—sort-of—leading us back out into the real world again by encouraging movement, keeping phones in pockets, and most importantly, looking up again .
