While living in Seattle, it was fun when we came across British things that reminded us of home. Most of the time we just happened to stumble upon these things, though we were actively seeking out the best place to get proper fish & chips. Now that I’m back in the UK and can reflect upon on my 3.5 years in Seattle, I thought it would be interesting to record them all here:

We'd like to share the briefest of updates on the Hadnagy lawsuit. The most recent progress is a ruling dismissing six of the plaintiff’s seven claims. Four of the claims were dismissed outright, as was part of Hadnagy's defamation claim, and two were dismissed with leave to amend. Part of the one defamation claim survived our motion to dismiss. The next move belongs to the plaintiff, as they determine how to proceed on the claims dism..

It is that time of year where performance and salaries are reviewed. In my new role it is the first time I have been part of this. I came across a very timely article that aligned nicely with one of the steps in our process.

A couple of days ago, I introduced Fresh Eyes , a little macOS utility to help me practice the 20-20-20 rule and take better care of my vision while on the computer. Today, Fresh Eyes was approved and is now available on the macOS App Store.

I started a paper reading club this week at work, focused on databases and distributed systems research. I posted in a general channel about the premise and asked if anyone was interested. I clarified the intended topic and that discussions would be asynchronous over email, run fortnightly. Weekly seemed way too often. A month seemed way too infrequent. Fortnightly seemed decent. I was nervous to do this because I've been here about 2 m....

Introduction: Scalable Group Decision-Making A deliberative consensus protocol is a process that online groups can use to make decisions. It’s designed to produce good decisions that are fair and manifest the collective intelligence of the group.

Writing is thinking. Software is peoples' thoughts on repeat. Developers who can pen their thoughts clearly multiply their impact. This matters even more in group work. Common sense rules; no literature major necessary.

Introduction Following the release of MDN’s AI chatbot “feature”, many developers turned to GitHub Issues to voice concerns . Most concerns revolved around the chatbot spouting misinformation on a technical reference expected to contain accurate information, and ethical concerns related to OpenAI and the use of a large language model (LLM). I don’t find the mere existence of LLM dishonesty to be worth blogging about; it’s already well-e....

You’re Cletus Kubernetus: a software developer, and a proud Fedora Linux user. 1 You know Kubernetes, especially after the time you migrated some services to it. Everything is calm. Your pods are running. Your service is up. Business as usual. You release some minor changes to production. Everything is still working. Great! But then you receive a message from a colleague. Oh no, something has gone wrong with a particular piec....

I have always been a big fan of SQLite and recently was using it with Go/Golang. However due to fact that goroutines are very convenient I quickly ran into the “database is locked” issue where multiple writes would try to update the database at any one time. Multiple reads worked without issue. I could have solved this by throwing a mutex lock around the database writes, but thats something I could easily mess up by missing the mutex and ..
