Jekyll Island 2024 - solomon.io - 2 years ago - eng
We’ve been traveling constantly since our wedding. Our first stop on that tour was a last-minute trip to Jekyll Island, GA for my birthday.

Add-on Controls for Heroku Teams At Heroku, trust and security are top priorities and we’ve been steadily adding more security controls to the platform. Recently, we launched SSO for Heroku Teams, and today, we’re excited to announce more enhancements for teams: add-on controls. Previously, this feature was only available to Heroku Enterprise customers. The Elements […] The post Add-on Controls for Pay-As-You-Go Customers appeared first..

Last week, a backdoor was discovered in xz-utils . The backdoor processes commands sent using RSA public keys as a covert channel. In order to prevent anyone else from using the backdoor, the threat actor implemented a cryptographic signature check on the payload. I have seen a number of people claim that this would necessarily result in an obviously invalid RSA public key, or at least one with no corresponding private key. This is i..

Here’s a random collection of quotes that I’m saving “Make something people want.”— Paul Graham “People can admit when they’re logically wrong. They will never admit when they’re emotionally wrong.”— Paul Portesi “Making a mistake is a net positive if you learn more from it than it cost you.”— Pedro Domingos “An idiot admires complexity, a […]

I've been lucky to have enjoyed healthy vision throughout my life. That is, until recently. Nothing major, I'll need glasses for some activities. I also learned from the optometrist I should follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain. The 20-20-20 rule is simple: Take a break from looking at your computer screen every 20 minutes and look away at something roughly 20 feet away (6 metres) for 20 seconds . While there are no ..

It is a pretty well known fact that if you give kids one-on-one tutoring from experts, they outperform classroom-educated students by an absurd two standard deviations . The effect size is absolutely mind-boggling, and a damning brand of indictment against the entire modern education system. The problem is that this stuff clearly doesn’t scale, for two reasons; first of all there isn’t enough experts to go around, as it would require a l..

The so-called “XZ attack” is all over the internet these days, and for good reason. Over a period of over two years, an attacker using the name “Jia Tan” worked as a diligent, effective contributor to the xz compression library, eventually being granted commit access and maintainership. Using that access, they installed a very subtle, carefully hidden backdoor into liblzma, a part of xz that also happens to be a dependency of OpenSSH ss..

General Update - joshuarogers.net - 2 years ago - eng
Well, I've managed to go just under two years and a half years without posting a single thing to the blog. So, what have I been doing in that time? Time travel perchance? Or possibly something a bit more mundane like being frozen in carbonite or trapped in the Phantom Zone? While all very reasonable guesses, the answer is “no”. I've started several posts, but haven't liked any of them enough to actually publish.

I recently finished reading “Vom Ende der Einsamkeit” (The End of Loneliness) by Benedict Wells. It’s a novel about the life of Jules Moreau, who loses his parents in a car accident at a young age and has to grow up alone with his two siblings. The book follows Jules through his life, from childhood to adulthood, and tells the story of his relationships, his struggles, and his search for meaning over a span of multiple decades.

I think Peter Levels doesn’t need an introduction. He’s the guy behind Nomad List , Remote OK , and Makebook . He’s a serial maker and has been building profitable startups for years now. He’s also a big advocate of building startups without funding. There’s quite the well known talk from him from six years ago on YouTube . Here’s a quick guide on how to create startups based on the key points from the talk: Idea: Solve your own....

In [[discrete-sample-jittering2]], I discussed the jittering approach that improves [[qrde]] for discrete distributions and continuous-discrete mixtures. In this post, I will show a brief example of how such an approach improves the accuracy of the [[lowland-multimodality-detection]].

Happy Easter! The second release of 2024 is here! It’s the result of 2 months of work by me and many contributors, aiming on releasing a v2 soon.

Let's talk about AdGuardHome, a network-wide ad blocking software that you can run in your homelab. It's a great way to block ads and trackers on your network without having to install ad blockers on every device.

Dune: Part Two hit theaters recently, which got me thinking about my own experience reading Dune in the past, what I enjoyed about it, and my own personal headcannon that made this novel more enjoyable for me. And hey, it’s April Cools , so why not put pen to paper here? Credit to this reddit thread for the initial discussion, but I hope I’ve expanded on the concept below. It’s April Cools! Last year I wrote about friendship bracelets and the year before about cocktails. This year it’s parenting.
