A friend of mine found himself working for a school in the mid 1990s, deploying a new lab of Apple Mac computers designed to teach graphic design. Before the deployment, he went to the technology decision-makers and told them that they could build a much faster lab for half the cost, since their Adobe software can also run on PC. He also noted that Macs play well with other proprietary Apple stuff, whereas PCs played well with most technolo..

American Diesel - zacs.site - 6 years ago - eng
I started with a simple question : Why does Europe have ultra efficient diesel vehicles, but America does not? I had heard the claims, that some European diesels get up to 80 miles per gallon — yet those in North America eek 50. I had a hunch, that stringent EPA rules forced auto makers to sell second-rate vehicles in the United States , but I had to know for sure. Permalink.

Snyk curates security patches for open source JavaScript projects in the npm ecosystem. By doing so, we help maintainers keep their packages safe and stay ahead of the security curve even when they aren’t free themselves to fix security issues immediately.

Google Drive no longer syncs with Google Photos, meaning viewing your Google Photos on your desktop or laptop is no longer simple.

Google cloud platform is a cloud computing service and a perfect alternate for Amazon Webservices. Nowadays most of the top companies are moving towards Google services for better results. Google cloud platform is offering a $300 free trial for one year. This post is about how to set up VM instances with firewall rules in addition to creating a XAMPP server with Ubuntu operation system. This is almost similar to my previous article about ..

Joe Jackson has some good tips for better camp kitchens. I like to keep everything for cooking, eating, and cleaning in one container, packed at all times. I keep a second one empty for dry goods. This makes trip prep a breeze: I just load the first tote in my car, then fill up the second tote and my cooler in the grocery store’s parking lot on my way out of town. Along with two dining tables , two water jugs , and my storage system , th..

4095 words, 16 minutes. A Diplomatic (Chinese) Design Presented to the U.S. – 12th February 1881 by Thomas Nast, for Harper’s Weekly. I rarely mention vendors here, so this post is an exception. It’s the second in my “Projectionist”series. The series is ultimately about power and the great forces and constraints shaping our world. I’m going to talk about 5G, Huawei, China and the consideration the UK and her allies are giving to the use of..

So I’ve found myself writing lots of bash scripts recently and because they tend to do real things to the file system or cloud services they’re hard to test… it’s painful. So it turns out there is an awesome linter/checker for bash called shellcheck which you can use to catch a lot of those gotchas before they become a problem. There is a great plugin for vscode so you get instant feedback when you do something you shouldn’t.

Ben Montgomery took his three kids on a 250 mile section of the Appalachian Trail, and wrote about their journey. I don’t have much to say about this other than that it made me smile, and made me want to get back into backpacking. Permalink.

The first half of 2019 is almost a month over. This makes it a good time to give a sales report on my t-shirt / print-on-demand side hustle.

I work in a technical profession, writing code and inspecting network traffic all day — and I found Anuschka Rees’ two-part series on garment quality fascinating. She approaches this topic as a technical one, with the exacting attention to detail I have come to appreciate in my line of work. I have devoted a lot of time to learning subtleties like these as a way to choose better adventure clothing, and could have seen myself writing somethi..

We are excited to share that developers can now test and monitor their projects for open source vulnerabilities, natively from within their Eclipse IDE (integrated development environment) instance.

I wanted to set up a fault tolerant nats-streaming-server , but couldn’t find a “quick” guide on how to do it - so here we are.

There is a little trick I just found about, which I think can be very useful when you split tasks across different notebooks. Jupyter notebooks keep gaining popularity and use cases, the rapid growth of the tooling ecosystem around it is just one proof (for example voilà or panel ). Most people choose Jupyter when publishing a course or tutorial on Github and that’s great, but when there are a lot of notebooks it can become messy.

We are thrilled to announce that Snyk has acquired DevSecCon, the world’s premier conference dedicated to DevSecOps – getting developers and security working well together! Whenever I’ve been promoted or moved into a management position, I reach for this book which I learned about after reading this post on how your first three months are so important for setting the right tone with your manager and the role you are signing up for.

The growth of open source alongside the lagging security standards has led many regulatory bodies and industry watchdogs to move toward stricter and clearer rules around how to protect applications that include open source code.

Hello! I thought it would be fun to write a post aimed towards business leaders making technology decisions for their organizations. There is a lot of hype in our field and little truth behind the hype. Like most things I write about, this started from an idea I had on Twitter: has anyone ever done technical breakdowns of these products in Gartner reports that are actually just trash, is this something you'd read..? — jessie frazell....

A little over a year ago, I moved to Fort Gordon for the Cyber Basic Officer Leaders Course. I saw one of my former classmates in the gym this morning, lounging on a bench press near two of his Soldiers. He once said that he did not have hours to spend in the gym every day, and that he had better things to do with his time. Permalink.

Bye Whatsapp A while ago I decided to move away from Whatsapp and Telegram in favor of Matrix, mostly to improve my privacy and get more control over my own data - yes Whatsapp, I’m looking at your limited backup options. But enough about the idealistic tech vision and more about tech itself. To get the most out of Matrix it is best to deploy an instance for yourself. It’s quite an involved process, however luckily there’s an Ansible playbo..

Developing cross-platform applications presents a major challenge:, how to ensure that every commit does not break some combinations of operating systems and CPU architectures. Fortunately, thanks an array of online services and open-source tools, this challenge becomes easier to tackle.

TL;DR - With such an overwhelming response to the original post , I have turned this into a KickStarter in an attempt to make this work. You can check it out here . Even better news, this is now not just a thing, but an actual physical product! Please check out LidLayer.com A few days ago, I posted about my MacBook Pro sticker prototype to help protect the lid, preserve my various stickers, and subsequently show how it ca..

In my last post, I looked into the infrastructure of mimalloc, to be frank. A few details on how it is actually hooking the system allocator when used, mostly. I’m still using what is effectively a random scatter/gather approach to the codebase. Mostly because it is small. I’m trying to… grok it would be the best term, I guess. I’m going over the code because it also give me a good idea about practices in what seems to be a damn good C co....

Tom Smith over at DZone, one of a handful of websites I read every day , just finished a great three-part series on common cybersecurity shortfalls. He highlights the importance of basic countermeasures, like encryption and patching, all the way up to complex topics like attack vectors. I recommend all three: part 1 , part 2 , and part 3 .
